Just asking for a bit of help choosing parts for this rig.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Gaming, web browsing

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
Less than AU$1000

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Australia, preferably from NSW

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
None really.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Most likely not, because they probably wont work (10 year old computer.)

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yeah kinda

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Stock for now but further down the road I see an overclock.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Soon, I hope.

Not sure about what parts but I was thinking along the lines of..
Intel q6600
4gb DDR2 RAM
Radeon 4850? Not sure if its compatible and will it be enough/too much for 19 in widescreen monitor?
500GB hard drive
dvd burner

Not sure about the PSU, Case and motherboard, help would be appreciated!

You don't need a quad core for "Gaming, web browsing".
Get the E7200. You can run "Stock for now but further down the road" you can OC.

Get a 4GB DDR2 PC2-6400 kit that is rated for 1.8v

The WD 640GB HD is the best bargain out there.

Samsung 20X SATA DVD burner.

The computer we have now is going on ten years, so this one might have to last ten years, so I'm kinda trying to "future-proof".

It's plain and simple...
Your budget is too low for a 10 year "future proof" build. :frown:

As of today the QX9770 is as "future proof" as you can get.
But you wouldn't have a MB, PS, HD, etc to run it, due to your budget.

Not gaming or anything like that for ten years. I just need it to last that long and still be moderately fast at just daily use.

If you only need a rig for daily use, simply buy a used PC now, stick the extra cash in a money market account, buy another used PC in 9 years.

> Problem Solved <

BTW, 10 years is just too far out to be predicting what hardware you might need.
10 years ago people were using socket 5 and socket 7 PC's. Are those PC's of any meaningful today?

I just had a look at it, what if I got:

Intel Q6600: $199AUD
Gigabyte EP35-DS3L: $105AUD
ATI Radeon 4850: $250AUD (Might get later when price comes down)
G.SKILL 4GB F2-6400CL6D-4GBMQ (2x2GB) PC-6400 (DDR2-800)6-6-6-18 $105AUD
Samsung 20xDVD -/+R/RW Dual Layer OEM Black SATA $25AUD
3.5" HDD SATA-300 500GB 16MB Samsung $80AUD

What I'm not sure about is the case and PSU.
For PSU I could get a:
520w Corsair HX-520 for $124.80
or
620w Corsair HX620 for $143.95.
I don't know if its enough or anything. Advice?

For the case I was thinking of a:
Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1-GP for $99
I'm not sure if I can get anything better for cheaper.

I've been getting these prices from a search engine called Static Ice
I still don't know where to buy from so help from an Aussie would be appreciated.

+1 for the E7200

The Gigabyte EP35-DS3L doesn't have PCIe 2.0. At least slash your build up front and buy a nice X38 mobo (like the Abit ???) ...

... and in 10 years we will have 100-core computers implanted in our brains

A faster dual-core makes more sense than quad-core for this. It definitely makes more sense for gaming for the next 3-4 years. How about a nice E8400? 3.0 GHz will beat senseless the puny 2.4 GHz of the quad.

I am using an E7200 Processor with an Intel DG35EC MB. Seems pretty fast with Vista. You can get faster, but you just have to pay more. Check the benchmarks for true processor performance at places like www.tomshardware.com. They have some charts that compare a wide range of processors, and some newer benchmarks. Quad Core may be overkill. However, at least get the newer .45nm Quad Core.
