Good for them. Indoor smoking should be banned.

Edit: I live in FL and we have an indoor smoking ban here. I saw before/after and it's much nicer being able to eat in a restaurant, go to a hotel lobby, etc without reeking of smoke. Bars (less than 10% of income from food) and casinos are exempt. Restaurants are still packed by the way.

What gives you the right to ban something that is legal to do? People do not have to go to places that allow smoking and there are plenty of places that are smoke free.

I kind of buy that argument, but I think banning it in BARS and NIGHTCLUBS is probably as stupid as it gets. Nothing wrong with becoming intoxicated ... but don't you smoke a cigarette!

Why can't I drink vodka from a mayonnaise jar while I'm walking through the grocery store? It's legal. I can do it at home if I want to. Why can't I do it in public?

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy a smoke free bar at times but other times I do light up. IMO, it should be the choice of the business - NOT the gov't.

So is the Iowa D party for or against free choice?

They're in favor of non-smokers choice to not die because of your habit.

Because we force non-smokers to go to places that allow smoking...

Yeah, but if I'm the DD of my group I'm not going to get accidentally intoxicated via second-hand liquor.

I am all for your freedom to do that. I think public intoxication laws go too far.

I dunno about Iowa (link didn't work for me) but in FL a bars or nightclubs that generates < 10% from food sales are exempt. The same goes for places like pool halls or bowling alleys.

I drink plenty and I have no problem with the laws. Even with the laws we have in place people still get stupid drunk and cause trouble. If they loosened them things would probably get worse.

You think? I really don't hear to many smokers complain about it here in MA or when I lived in CA. They just adapted by going outside to smoke.

Read the house bill - only exemptions are casinos and VFW(private clubs)

What I find ironic is those who cry loudest (and usually first) over personal freedoms and civil rights seem to be A-OK with things like this which restrict them. It's really laughable, and what will they say when the nutjobs target something they hold dear?

It's not about "Just go outside", it is principle.

I've got no problem with it. If I wanna smoke while out, I go outside.

I should be allowed to urinate and defecate wherever I feel like. After all, it's legal for me to piss and shit in the comfort of my own home. Or sex! I should be able to fornicate wherever I damn well please. But nooooo, the MAN wants to suppress my rights to have a wild watersports scat orgy in my public park. It's disgusting!

The government sets time and place restrictions all the time. It's legal to sell alcohol, but not between 2:30am and 7:00am. It's legal to consume alcohol, but not on public property. It's legal to drive 65 on the freeway, but not through a residential neighborhood. Part of living together as a society is coming up with a set of rules that we can all agree to abide by, and these include rules that tell us when a certain behavior is acceptable or when it is not. It's always been that way, it always will be. Can you imagine if everything that was legal in any place was legal everywhere, any time? My God, it would be catastrophic. Although it would certainly help with the morality problem we have in this country (mainly that everyone is too damn concerned with morality to the point where breasts are taboo).

Don't your personal freedoms end once they infringe upon someone else's? And I don't think that smoking even comes close to being a civil liberty/right.

I'm a non-smoker and can't stand the smell of cigars or cigarettes, (I will actually get ill being around it), but I defend the rights of smokers to light up wherever the hell they want.
I just choose either to walk away or stay away from those establishments where it is allowed.
Bottom line is if you forcefully take this right away from people then what is next on the list? I'm against anyone in favor of eroding any of our rights.

As do I, whether required by law or not.

But that isn't my point here. It's a slippery slope.

Not even close to the same thing. These strawmen have been tried before but still don't work.

I don't smoke, but I don't see why restaurants and whatnot can't institute their own bans. Seriously, I don't want to eat at a place that reeks of burning plant matter.

Exactly. I do the same even in establishments that allow smoking. If the company I am with doesn't smoke, I usually excuse myself. The same applies when dining.

It's not only about the individuals but also private businesses. It should be the establishment's choice - not the gov'ts.
