Plus they are accountable to the public and serve at their pleasure. There is substantially less leverage with the private insurance groups in the system we have now.
My brother is also facing debilitating medical issues. Although not as serious as yours, he still lives in a constant state of pain, is still in his 30s, and has to spend considerable energy and out of pocket expenses to get coverage and treatment.
Even more problematic, it began with a workplace injury so he has had to negotiate legal issues and finger pointing between workmans comp and his private coverage, both trying to deny responsibility and minimise treatment. It's inhumane and wasteful.
In a public system, the voters themselves decide the quality and expense of our healthcare system.
Sadly, that point may be the biggest indictment against single payer in this country as it necessitates an informed voter acting in good faith towards his fellow countrymen. Not feeling highly confident of that assumption these days.
I can't "like" this post because your brother's situation & the pain he lives with is nothing to like.
