Forbidden Death
I remember crystal clear the day you left
The day you walked out leaving your world and me behind
Woke late that night, sobbing, full of fear, emotionally bereft
Stirred from this fright to see if ghosts of you were kind
But they were not
Naught did I have when I jiggled that handle to the door
Naught did I have when I tripped and hit the wooden floor
Naught did I get when facing heaven, I implored
Wished I were blind, felt I'd need a cane
To get up, to rise again to face the pending day
Face my fears and hopes that return to me you may
But I couldn't even roll -- over... on the cold hard floor I lay
For hours... hours... smelled the scent of heavenly flowers turn to hellish when it sours
And there I cried
Such a loss -- oh, I tried
To hang on, but belied
By the fact that I had already died
Because I thought upon the day you left

And I bet you woke late that night, sobbing, emotionally bereft
Stirred from this fright but couldn't see a ghost of me
Yet you still came to freshen flowers
Replaced the scent which quickly sours
And there at my stone, your heart, you cried
Mourned your loss, you tried
To hold your emotions inside
Yet your tears they belied
Which welled up on that cold hard stone
But melted the stone within your soul
For three days long this visit you tried to postpone
But at that service, you couldn't quite let go
So here you are and here you'll stay
Till once again the sun within has shown
And you let go of your heart -- my tombstone.
