On the other hand, one could respond that no one has ever done speed bins on chipsets before,
Then what is the correct industry discription of the Nforce2 chipset revisions

So PAT does exist. It's a hardware feature, which, as XBit Labs astutely pointed out, is like AMD's old Super Bypass Mode. "
First, a quote from Intel that PAT is not in the hardware. Then a statement that "PAT exists and is hardware". It seems to me that the quote was not read at all.

A better description of the situation can be found at Tom's Hardware Since it is not hardware, Asus is able to find a way to bypass Intel's lock and activiate PAT on the 865 motherboard. Other MB manufacturer may follow suit pretty soon.

well, in my experience with both chipsets you cannot feel a difference. Benchmarks show it, but is it worth it for the "piece of mind" factor alone? I don't think so, but again it's your call.

The article on how Asus was able to bypass the Intel lock and activiate the PAT on their 865 disappeared shortly after posted. Anyone knows what is going on?

Metamorphosis from Springdale to Canterwood
Asus has succeeded in activating the PAT optimization with the P4P800, which is based on the 865PE chipset. THG shows you the details. It's a hot topic, but what does Intel think of it all?
... able to active Intel's Performance Acceleration Technology (PAT) for robust computing. Currently, ASUS' 865PE motherboards are the only solutions in the market ...

As a result of Asus working directly with THG, the company decided to take the difficult step of giving us exclusive and exciting information about how PAT can be reactivated with the 865/Springdale chipset. This information will also help to take care of any possible misunderstandings among hardware enthusiasts.

The pages are back. Go see how this was done at Tom's Hardware.
