The Trademark Office apparently allows all sorts of derogatory trademark names, so their reasoning seems to be BS, so I'm thinking the Redskins would win a court case.

Current examples? I linked a story earlier how one was denied for racism.

I've done with you, child.

In other words, your last card equals a petulant nothing. Hey good for you. Attorneys have found a new arbitrary and capricious bubble or windfall, offensive trademarks to add to patent trolls. I hope you are smart enough to get a piece of that cash. I also hope you don't get offended if I ignore most of what you wrote in deference to Michael McCann.

BTW, too bad there isn't any money to be made (from an enterprising someone) in combing the dictionary.

Hoogligan: "The earliest use of the word "hooligan" dates back to British newspaper and police reports in the summer of 1898. They seem to have adapted the word from the Houlihan family, a group of Irish immigrants living in London. The family became known for their hilarious drinking songs, jigs and their enthusiastic police brutality that tended to ensue."

Hip Hip Hooray: The first half of "hip hip hooray" is adapted from "hep hep," an old German shepherds' herding cry. That is, actual shepherds from Germany. Not the dogs. Sounds pretty innocuous, right? Well, it was, up until around 1819, when the citizens of Germany and other neighboring countries began using it as their rallying cry while going Hebrew-hunting in the Jewish ghettos. So keep that in mind next time you're trying to come up with an appropriate cheer at your cousin's Bar Mitzvah.

There were many blogs listing such trademarks or trademark applications right after the denial was announced.

This is but one of many.

You can just look in the grocery store at product names.
Aunt Jemima
Uncle Ben's
Eskimo Pie
IIRC there was a date they started limiting trademarks, so lots of things were grandfathered in. I want to say it was in the mid 80s, these trademarks are older than that.

Then I looked at your link. Wow, just wow.

I'm really torn on this subject, but I think it comes down to this: do we want patent clerks deciding morality. I tent to want to favor free speech here.

The Washington Redskins trademarked their name well before the 1980's.

If "Aunt Jemima" is grandfathered in, given it's seriously racist past, then "Washington Redskins" certainly should be.

I'm sure someone has already corrected you...but I for the record, they are named after Paul Brown.

You just need a group to claim offense at the term, and file the papers...

Doesn't matter too much where it originated.

As an Asian, I am offended by Ken Jeong and the roles he plays in films. I'd like to file a petition to have him banned from all forms of media.

Also, I am offended when co-workers find out I'm Korean...then every time they go to a Korean market or restaurant, they itemize what they ate or bought to me every single time. I move to have that banned from the workplace.
