So I've just started playing this game for the first time. At first glance it seems similar to Diablo, Torchlight, Fate, etc. I picked the ranger class and am currently two hours in. I do have some questions regarding the game, will appreciate answers.

1. So far it's really tedious going back and forth and selling drops. Should I just ignore picking up most items? Since there is no currency, they're only giving me some scraps for them anyways.

2. Is there a legit way to zoom out?

3. I've stored the gems, orbs, essences etc in my stash for now. Killing enemies so far is pretty easy and I figured there's no need to buff my weapons yet. Will these items be of more value later or should I just use them?

1) Once you have a few wisdom scrolls to your name, only bring back rare (yellow) items, ID them all, vendor unless it's an upgrade (as a new player I strongly recommend playing self-found for a little while, you can trade once you know the basics and will be far less likely to fall for bad deals)

2) You can't zoom out further than the default max. Mousewheel zooms in/out within the limits. This is intended and provides a similar view distance to Diablo 2 (what this game is trying to model itself after)

3) Feel free to use orbs of transmutation/augmentation, they won't have much value later and you get LOTS of them. Skill gems, I recommend using every one you find briefly so you can see what it does, but unless you're intending to use it, just ditch it after checking it out. They have no value. EXCEPTION: if the gem has "quality", save it - you can sell these to other players later or vendor them in groups of 40% quality for Gemcutter's Prisms.

4) No penalty in Normal, 5% of current level experience in cruel, 10% of current level experience in merciless. You cannot be de-leveled. In Hardcore, death means your character wakes up in Standard League (permanent softcore).

Doing self made at the very start of your experience I think is best. You get a feeling for just how much optimization goes into making your character good, by failing to do any of it yourself. Thus, you have a better understanding of the guide you'll end up following.

Just never forget, you do 0 DPS when dead. Better to invest in survival over damage until you can survive long enough to do damage.

To be honest the AT guild pretty much died. No one but me and Xiandre were on consistently. Both him and I moved on to a more active guild.

I played a decent amount. Just disenchanted with the current 2.4, though I may come back in eventually.

Yup, what an awful league. I was looking forward to leveling and killing shaper, but if I can't even get the maps on Standard then how on earth can I get them in a 3 month... I'll run standard this league and play some other games.

I still don't get how maps are a problem. Clearing all possible is the key. Shaper seems like he's going to be a bitch to kill though. I'm so far away from that right now. :/

From what the guildies in the Euro build are saying its not an issue at all to sustain maps.

Dunno man... Bounced down to T3 three times now on Essence. Cant get past T13 on standard and that's where I started lol.

If you were at 80/125 on your Atlas you'd be getting t13s fine I think.

I'm only cleared through t9 and have like 15 t9 maps and 5 t10/11

I'm actually being to enjoy 2.4/ Essence league. It may be sacrilege but until now I thought maps were pretty pointless, just play them for loot and experience. It bugged me that nearly all of them were straight lifts from various parts of the main game.

Now with the Atlas maps have both changed a lot and have a real purpose now.

Essence is similar to what they had two leagues ago (those tresure chests) but without the horrendous lag.

The Lab still sucks though.

Still putting a lot of hours in. To whoever put the lifesprig in the guild stash, my eternal thanks.

What should I be doing with these essences I'm picking up? They seem pretty useless since I can't modify my gear with them. My gear is already all rare items.

I wish Essences were more similar to boxes... That would be awesome. Boxes were probably the best change the game has seen. The only similarity I see though is you have to activate them... I'm not particularly enjoying the mobs or their drops.

Lab is awesome! I really don't get the hate for it. Generally people just find it tedious and stressful. That's the whole idea! It's a brilliant change of pace from the PoE grind that requires you to focus for a bit, and it introduces softcore players to hardcore mechanics. The only thing I absolutely cannot stand about lab is the trials. I cannot believe something so pointless is in the game, and running 200 maps to even unlock the lab is terrible game design.

I still think the Atlas was horribly implemented, and probably their worst update. There wasn't enough testing done and it wasn't explained well enough on release. The forums still can't conclude if the bonus is actually working or not... I also think that it mistakenly portrays that there is some type of progression through maps. There still isn't. Players buy maps or run labs to bypass. If you didn't do that you got stuck under T5.

When they first introduced the Atlas I thought they had truly given players a way to progress. I thought boss kills would grant progression map drops and people would be able to explore the Atlas. Instead we got the same exact system we had with a "bonus" that we don't know if it works or not. The map shaping and modifying is a nice change, but that could have been done without the Atlas.
I think they dropped the ball with this update.

Thanks. I've been saving them so far. I haven't found any normal/magic items better than the rares I find so I've just been putting all the orbs/essences/gems etc in my stash for now. I figure once I've progressed/played more, I'll know what to do with them. I also accidentally found out how to make bigger flasks, didn't realize this game had recipes like that.

Also, I got one shotted by the main boss in the Labyrinth, Izaru?. It was my first death since Act 1 (went afk and died). I was at the recommended zone level but maybe it was too low. I'm going to finish Act 3 before going back to it.

Izaru should be done when you've finished Act 4 in most instances. He is also a boss about avoidance. You can't generally tank his hits.

1200 alts in on my 6l coronal maul and no good rolls yet. Managed to get a decent one on poe.trade though for just over 2 ex and now I'm smashing t12.

Switched my bladefall berserker from dual apeps to dual obliteration. Lost 30% tooltip dps. Doubled clearspeed. Seemsgood. Up to t8s reliably at 87, would go for faster progression but aqua's only 80 so taking it easy. 6800 life with vaal pact, not much hurts me. I can even do phys reflect maps (carefully).
