Yes. It is much more Diablo 2 than Diablo 3. The main problem I had when I played the beta a good while ago was it was very unpolished. It would have been great in 2001, but in 2013, it was just not very good. They have come a long way since then. It is meant to be dark, and have that old school dungeon crawler feel. There still are some things I feel they could have greatly improved upon (the animations aren't great), but overall, it is a solid game if you go in expecting a diablo clone.

I big gripe I have is they let you use stats gained from gear to help with requirements and don't really warn you about this. My ranger had a couple pieces of gear I was using that when I changed necklaces I was nowhere near close to being able to use. (I was getting +32 int from the necklace). I, luckily, could get a +30 int node and only needed one level to drop the necklace, but it was a bit annoying having to go and possibly replan my next several levels.

I figured this would be pretty common knowledge for those that play these type of games. Gem requires 15 dex and I have 5 and my equipment gives me 11? I now have 16, so I can use it! No offense, but duh?

It just gets annoying because I didn't realize so much of my int was coming from an item I picked up 25 levels ago. I had 14 int without the necklace and 46 afterwards (or something like that). And for hours I had been leveling up gems that required int that high. Take the necklace off and half my gear goes useless.

I understand they allow it, I just wish they had shown it on my character sheet. A simple 14 + 32 or whatever would be fine. Had that information been available to me, I might have leveled up that stat much earlier.

That makes much more sense. And I agree with the (14 + 32) comment.

How similar is this to Diablo? I feel like I have played that game a dozen times with different names, but I keep getting suckered into it.

Also, the skill tree--the video I watched brought back horrible memories of the ability wheel or whatever in Final Fantasy X--is this one limited to how many points you can spend? Can you re-spec?

...I realize these are rather dumb questions for a free game, I might as well try it out myself...but my shit Comcast connection means that any download eats up my bandwidth for about 12 hours minimum. Nothing is free!

This game is very similar to Diablo, in that it is a Diablo clone. There are some key differences, but the game remains Diablo at heart (but that isn't a bad thing). Skills aren't bound to a character or a "build". Skills are obtained by finding skill gems. When putting those gems in an appropriately colored socket on a piece of gear, you can have access to that skill. If the gear has multiple sockets and they are linked, you can put support gems in those that augment that skill however the support gem does.

The level up system is vast, but it really isn't as complex as they'd like to you believe. Most of the nodes are simple stat nodes. The rest are support for other kinds of things. Examples: Increase damage done by bows x percent or increase mana by x percent. There are some interesting nodes though (Blood Magic is a good one; it reduces you mana to 0 and you now cast using health). As far as respec, technically yes, but effectively no. There are items that allow you to refund a skill point (and since you get one every level, at level 60 this is unfathomable) and a few quests give you refund points.

If you enjoyed D2, it is worth a look at least. It is free, after all.

The game's running smoothly for me, which is nice after the horrendous D3 release. The Psion class is fun so far, and I like the addition of the shrines and hope they keep them in the normal league once this one is done. The new portal animations look kinda wonky, but all the other new ones look really nice. I've held off cause I don't really want anything, but I'll give them some money via micro-transactions soon.

I feel kinda odd playing this game and it's all free. I feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I need to go look and see if they have paypal so I can at least throw $5 their way.

I agree, send them some feedback. Seems a simple thing for them to do in the next patch.

press "m", take a look at their microtransactions shop, you can buy points for 5, 10, 20 bucks, get some stash slots or smth. game does, indeed, give you that feeling that this is too good to be just free, so I'm planning to spend a tenner there, too, or smth.

The 1.0 patch has renwed my addiction to this game. I started up a "domination" league scion as my first new character. I love the build options from starting in the middle of the tree. The weapon throw ability is interesting. It's been highly effective with lesser multiple projectiles and such. I don't like how it scales- it doesn't benefit from strength or weapon damage increase nodes. You can increase it's damage with projectile damage nodes, but it's sort of awkward because none of your other abilities do. So it kinda works if it's your only attack, if you use multiple attacks (I use heavy strike for single target dps) you need to decide which ones you want to focus on with your passives. Or just stack strength and take iron grip.

I almost regret playing domination. I usually only play hardcore, and I actually got to the new end boss without dying once. Damn though, dominus has some very annoying mechanics and I died 4 times trying to kill him solo. Oops. Good thing this wasn't hardcore! His phase 3 is just ridiculous if you are solo. Joined a random pug group and killed him no problem. Grouping really makes him easier to kill.

I don't like the new Animate Weapon or Animate Guardian spells. Can't even cast them if they aren't bound to a mouse button and you have key-pickup set in options. Even if you can cast them, it's just awkward needing items on the ground before you can use them and it didn't seem like the payoff was worth the micromanagement hassle. Animate Weapon would be awesome if it just animated your current equipped weapon (without destroying it) and had some cooldown or something to keep it balanced. The current implementation has no limits, you can drop 8 weapons and animate them all, but the awkwardness of doing so makes it unusable in most cases.

You forgot to add "but I still buy all dem Steam games from Lord Gaben, despite the DRM functioning worse than what MS was trying to sell me."

hmm I missed my part on steam love.. I actually like the way GOG does it.. but it was really about if a company does stuff you don't like, you need to no buy their products.. EA has a stranglehold and is leveraging it.. MS was doing the same, and even if its changed stance, will change it again as soon as it can, but everybody has forgot that it was trying to fook um 3 months ago.. MOST (not all) game can still be bought on a shelf and a keycode put in.. no ORIGIN, no STEAMWORKS, just that code one time.. but again this was off topic .. sorry i added to it.

What is the thing with those different "leagues" I browsed the forum an noticed there were several different types posted but didn't dig yet into what it meant.

Leagues:
When you create a character in Path of Exile, you choose a league for that character to exist in. We expect and encourage most players to play in the default league, but other leagues exist for specific play styles or events.

Characters can only see and interact with other characters in the same league. In this way, each one is its own isolated economy. The default league is extremely large and hence acts as a general economy for all characters that were not created in a specialist league. All characters in a league have access to the same shared stash pages.

Competition
Each league has its own set of ladder rankings. We’ll be frequently creating short term leagues that last varying durations (a day, a weekend, a week, etc) with item rewards for the highest placed characters on the ladder at the end of the league. There are leagues that end once a specific goal has been met (a race to level 90, for example).

League competitions are another way for players to get rewarded for their play skill and to be competitive with other players as an alternative to PvP.

Completion
There are a few permanent long term leagues including the default “standard” and “hardcore” leagues. All other leagues have a duration value and a parent league. When the duration is over, all characters in that league become part of the parent league.

Whenever any league ends, its characters are all converted back to its parent league. This way, no one loses the character they were leveling (it just ends up in a less restricted economy/ladder than the one it was initially being played in).

Game Modes
Leagues are able to apply a different set of game rules to their players. For example, increased monster difficulty, world PvP, permadeath or various "Ironman" rules.

We have many plans for interesting game modifiers that leagues can apply, but one rule is clear – they must only make the game harder. Because characters transfer back to the parent league when a league ends, it is important that the character’s journey to its current status was equivalent or more difficult than gameplay in the parent league.

Paid Leagues
In addition, we plan to allow guilds or groups of players to pay for the creation of their own league with a choice of game rule modifiers. Only players invited by the people who paid for the league can create characters in these private leagues. This option helps cater towards any groups of players who want to play online together but don’t want their playgroup to have access to items traded from external players.

I don't think you can pay for more inventory, it says its just for SHARED inventory between characters.

I've spent some time playing this the last 2 days, and I'm really impressed. Amazing quality Diablo-like game for free. The passive skill tree is absolutely nuts, I like it.

When I first played the game in beta, I was a bit irked that I couldn't chose my gender. I wanted a wizard type character, but didn't matter, I just created a templar. Then I logged in the game, killed some things and then opened up the skill tree and said 'forget this' and then closed out and didn't play again.

Then, I read a bit more about the game, and many people made the comment 'the skill tree isn't as complex as they would like you to believe' and so I decided to look at it again, and it didn't take more than a minute or two to understand it. I agree, it isn't complex, it just seemed like it at the time.

I also read that 1.0 may have some customizations to your character in the future regarding gender (who knows if it will ever materialize) and decided I would play the game again.

So, I fired it up last night and started a Maurader, Artaxerxes the Third, to be precise. The first 15 levels I didn't even equip a skill stone until I read in chat that 'you can remove the skill stones' what? You mean I went though 15 levels with the basic attack? I was thinking, why put a nice stone in something that I will replace next level? Wow, so I equipped my AoE stone and all of a sudden my character went from 'ok' to dominated anything. It was pretty cool. Even more cool, I discovered that those little orbs level up.

I still am nowhere near to figuring out this game. The downside of having an open beta like they did, is that there is innacurate information from the beta floating around that probably doesn't apply to 1.0... So, instead wading through guides, I decided to just play and learn as I go.

Bottom line - For a free to play game, they really hit the mark here.
