I wouldn't bother trying to 5L or 6L an item unless you have tons of fusings.

I ended up buying both of mine, for far less than the cost of 500+ fusings.

I don't really bother trying to trade with other players. I don't know the values of pretty much anything, nor what currency is the excepted form. So, I am pretty much self found or self made.

Trading with the random idiots in the trade channel is just a waste of time IMO.

However, I have found a decent way to buy stuff. I just use http://poe.xyz.is/ and always check "online only" and "buyout only" when I am making the actual purchase (though sometimes for informational purposes it can be interesting to see what else is out there). If someone doesn't list a buyout, I'm not going to waste time trying to buy from them.

It's funny too when someone has something for sale and they have a current offer of say 4 chaos and I can just go on poexyz and find something basically identical with a 1 chaos buyout. Nobody really knows the value of things, it's just people trying to rip other people off in the trade channels.

Wow, this site is awesome. Thanks so much!

Just be aware that the poexyz site used to a fan site, but it was bought by a gold/item selling website. It's in their best interest to get your items, so keep your AV/browser up to date before visiting.

Not saying they are shady, but I err on the side of caution.

I thought poeex was the one RMTs bought out, I still see xyz post on the forums from time to time.

Yea, I think your right. It's been a while since I played pre-Steam, but I think the site was poeex; disregard my previous post.

#edit

Just roflstomped Piety merciless for two friends. Told them to just kill the portals while I tanked her.... well she got through to multiple fire portals (melee form) and I popped my granite flask with +86% armor and just tanked her. I feel pretty badass now lol; I don't have the dps of some people I see but I haven't died (like they do- often) in over 2 weeks now.

Btw, I'm 'Buffy_the_lag_slayer"; usually on late EST. Need some help, send me a msg. The only worthwhile exp I can get is from 74+ maps, which I don't have, so the next best thing is helping other people out and playing in a group.

Well, I did it again. Started over at 67. =( I actually liked my Spectral Throw build, but I wasn't tanky enough for my tastes.

Going to do a more defensive build with EK and Arctic Armor now!

Been through 5 nemesis characters, highest made it to 47, and then cruel Vaal monkey stomped me. I suppose I'll still finish the game with that templar toon because i wanna see end game and the map system. I'll probably jump on the next hardcore ladder in February.

So, I am not agreeing poexyz is bad, but it does show some rather strange javascript sources (which I have blocked; thanks NoScript!). They don't exactly sound legit. So, be careful.

Hit 72 on my nemesis league witch last night. Highest I have been so far, on a hardcore character. Around 2.5k hp and no energy shield, sounds like poor survivibility, but I run EB AA MoM and working on increasing block & spellblock. In addition, 4 links for cast on damage taken and cast on stun give me a lot of extra buffers and help when I need it most. All in all it's been a very durable character so far, though I am sure I will find death eventually.

For damage, I run fireball arc and ice nova. I'd settle on one spell, but so far the flexibility has been very useful. I can't seem to 5l or 6l my chest for anything, which is the main thing holding back my DPS at this point.

TBH, spells seem to be in a bad place. My melee and spectral throw characters were doing a lot more damage with crap for weapons. If/when I reroll this character, I am thinking of going with the same defensive suite but with a weapon based offense core.

Spells are currently deemed somewhat underpowered. The main reason for this is that you MUST level them to 20 to get the top tier damage whereas other builds scale on the weapon. Having quality helps as well. At level 72 your spells are probably 17-18 in level. It's darn time consuming to level from 18-20 but you will see a large increase in your damage.

This is my problem as well. I am running a survival build with AA, MoM, and using EK for damage. It is a lot of fun (and incredibly hearty), but my damage is a tad on the low side. I imagine once I hit level 20 EK I will do more damage (and get a 5 or 6 link... 4 link is the suxxors at level 74). I will probably just 20 quality it though and start over.

Something I like about spells though, is I am not dependent on upgrading my wand. Getting spell damage increase, cast speed, and projectile speed can come from any level to be an upgrade. =)

After agonizing over the seemingly necessary character build homework, I took everyones advice and just jumped in. I started a now Level 16 Ranger.. Having fun so far, just kinda adding nodes that seem to make sense and trying to figure out the mechanics. I have a bunch of green gems in leveling up, but I primarily am using Lightning Arrow, Rain of arrows, and fork+poison for my attacks.

A couple things I am confused on:

Armor - I get I should be building up evasion as a ranger, or should I be just going for the best piece ? I'm not quite sure of the mechanics between Evasion/armor/energy shield yet, and which is preferable

Loot - I get there isnt money , its all barter.. So far, I have been using my typical ARPG method ( ignore whites, pick up blue/yellow) - Since the indentify scrolls seem to be a currency, should I be spending them on loot that I am just selling to the vendor ? I think right now, I only identify yellows and above to sell back unless it looks like something I might be able to use.

Armor in this game works differently but it is much more valuable in most people's opinion than straight evasion.

There is a notable keystone passive near the ranger start called Iron Reflexes that converts all evasion and % increase evasion into pure armor, most people that pick up evasion on gear/skill points pick this up. Going pure
ES is definitely a lot harder to play than hp and I would ignore trying to build for it when starting out.

Orbs are the currency, the most commonly traded are Orb of Chaos, Orb of Alchemy, and Orb of Fusing. Most orbs change parts of items and are more often than not better to save than use yourself. Starting off you might be low on Scrolls of Wisdom and you have the right idea to only keep/vendor yellows though. Most people ignore blues unless they are good base items, like rings or certain belts, or possible upgraes. Wisdom scrolls aren't worth much either so don't worry about using them either, you'll have plenty if you don't ID every blue.

When I get back from military training in a month I wanna make a crit trapper build. Might be one way to stay alive in hardcore.

You're going to want to plan to get most of the life nodes around where you're building as well as making sure that your gear has +life on it is possible. Some hardcore builds take only defensive nodes, but since a few patches back you can be comfortable at around a 50-50 ratio defense to offense. The game is VERY difficult though if you have less than 2000 health in Merciless Act 3... I can do every map in the game (though I skip some bosses) at 3500 health.

I prefer to build armor based characters, though the guys with top gear build energy shield and I've seen some successful evasion based builds floating around lately... There are things that hit INCREDIBLY hard vs armor, but those can be mitigated through using granite flasks with increased armor mods.

Economy wise, if you want to start trading poe.xyz is a good site to start with. I also just sit and watch chat to see what people are charging. I would also go check out this website to see what the different currency recipes are. (The chaos orb ones are super useful late game)

well, i finally downloaded this and have played a few hours because of this thread. Not sure how much longer I will play--I tend to suddenly turn against dungeon-crawling Diablo clones, despite enjoying them immensely up until that moment.

I started a shadow, and have been putting most of my points into dexterity, just unlocked the crit chance + intelligence trait that you find early in the tree. AMIDOINITRONG?

I'm about level 10 or 11 now. I was hanging in the starting area, and some dude named Ron Swanson's Mustache shows up and starts giving away very good low level gear. I hadn't figured out the chat system yet, so i just started running around like a chicken and he opened a trade window, lol.
I got a nice orange ammy, gloves, and a redbreaker something 1 handed sword. It's like cheating right now.

So right now I'm sword + dagger, been using viper strike, double strike, and reave. I also have the fire/corpse explosion thingy.

I haven't spent any orbs, mostly just selling whatever gear i can carry.

I suppose there is no way to get gem store currency without spending real money? If I play long enough or find that getting deep into this is something I like, then I will float them some money anyway.

By gem store do you mean the microtransaction shop?

yeah, that one.

Yeah, that is only for microtransactions. All of those items are just cosmetic (well, I suppose the stash tab and guild stuff can be a bit helpful). It is a great idea though. Nothing really game changing. I ended up buying $30 worth and enjoy it. They have a daily deal which is a discounted item that can end up being great deals.

I would only consider stash tabs, really.

Some of the stuff is pretty nice. I have the infernal skull and the flame weapon and a bunch of stash tabs. (I waited for each to go on sale before I bought them). Honestly, the stash tabs aren't even a big deal. Like, I have 10, and vary few are filled. I have one filled with gems, one with gear, and two for currency (one for the less currency like scrolls and alterations and one of the better stuff like chaos + and maps).
