I got an offer to get 24GB of DDR3-1600 for $310.

I've never used this brand before.

What kind of chips do they use on their modules? One newegg review said they took 7-7-7-20 timings.

Usually I stick with Corsair or Crucial but this price is too good to pass up!

This is the memory kit in question:

I've used it in the past and its not bad, I would call them mid range. I still have 4 1GB DDR2 sticks of Patriot memory in my server that are over 5 years old and have been fine even after i overvolted them to get better timings when they were in my main rig. They are not as good as corsair though IMO.

Patriot is good solid memory. I personally wouldn't buy the overvolted DDR3 you have linked.
Memory is a sort of "pay me now or pay me later" item.

I first bought some DDR2, NIB, from a guy on ebay and it didn't work. Patriot still replaced it for me, which I thought was great and am still using that 2 gig and another 4 gig in another unit. Haven't needed any DDR3, but I would definately consider it.

The 1.65V rating is one indication the memory was made with subprime chips that failed some testing by the chip manufacturer, the presense of heatsinks is another.

I guess Corsair Domintator GTX are "subprime" too? LOL

I found out why they want to sell them cheap though. They absolutely refuse to post at anything over 1066MHz. They also are SPD at 7-7-7-20 which is strange.

I went ahead and ordered this set:

1.5V too.

I have used Patriot memory for probably 4+ years, and have never had any issues. When I look at buying memory, Patriot is one of the brands at the top of my list

Both my E2140 rigs have been running 2x2GB DDR2-800 kits. Specced for 5-5-5-12 @ 2.0v, running at 5-5-5-15 (maybe 18) at 1.8v.

patriot is good. if it's gaming ram among other gaming ram, get the cheapest stuff that's not heavily tampered with. the tampering usually should be done with the mobo itself, in my opinion.

i try to stay away from the ballistix lines, i've seen too many fail.

Most likely, as there are no 1.65V first-quality chips:

Right they are overspec'd. JEDEC profiles show this on all the chips. Most X58 users that WANT XMP are overclocking anyways so their VTT is already raised making 1.65 safe. I've seen naked (no heatspreaders) modules rated at 1.65V too. I bet they are toasters.

I'm not considering overclocking specs at all, but subprime modules, like Corsair Dominators, will fail even non-overclocked testing at 1.5V.

I've never heard of memory modules being made with naked chips, that is, with unpackaged chips bonded directly to the circuit board and then covered by blobs of black epoxy, as is done with some calculators and digital clocks.

Semantics. Naked chips meant without heat spreaders.

I'm anxious to hear what a corsair rep thinks of comments on their "subprime" modules as well.

Naked means no packaging, and Corsair admits to using UTT chips.
