1. The Cowboys
2. The Patriots
3. The Raiders
what? ppl hate the yankees because they have the highest payroll and basically buy championships - that is, the playing field isn't level if one team can afford the best players and another team can't. now, i don't necessarily agree with that, but it's TOTALLY different than winning superbowls in a sport that has a salary cap and is successful because of a good system of recruiting/coaching/etc.
having said that, the pats played like crap tonight. they totally abandoned the run game and brady was uncharacteristically bad (well... about as bad as that game against the broncos last year). he threw 3 picks, constantly underthrew/overthrew open receivers and in general didn't look like himself. granted, the chargers had the advantage of being able to defend against the pass virtually every down, but it doesn't excuse bad decisions.
however, as usual, new england was incredibly opportunistic and pulled through in the clutch. they did
just enough to eek out a victory, which some may call luck, but when you win like that year after year, it has to be something more. they know how to fight, how to grind and how to tough it out to the end. and they have a system (coaches, scouts, etc) that's smart enough to give them the opportunity to win every time. san diego, on the other hand, despite (on paper) being a better team didn't have the experience/system/drive to capitalize on the dozens of opportunities they had to put the game away.
next week's colts vs. pats should be a sick game. lots of history between the teams and both QB's are coming off very rough starts. i can almost feel, however, that the game will come down to field goals and we'll get to see if the pats will regret not resigning vinateri....
