Siren: Paul Ryan confidants say he's not running again

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has told confidants that he will announce soon that he won't run for reelection in November, according to sources with knowledge of the conversations.

Why it matters: House Republicans were already in very tough spot for midterms, with many endangered members and the good chance that Democrats will win the majority. Friends say that after Ryan passed tax reform, his longtime dream, he was ready to step out of a job that has become endlessly frustrating, in part because of President Trump.

Looks like the growing consensus among the GOP is that the House will be lost, obviously no reason for him to stick around then. Lots of stories lately about the Republicans diverting resources to keeping the Senate so as not to throw good money after bad.

Edit: updating title since he announced

Queue up the song for the fat lady. Dems now need to work hard for the Senate.

Bigly if true and one hell of a white flag being held up by the house this far out.

My guess is he takes some fas paying lobbyist job and lays low for a few years. Then pops back up in a gubanatorial race once the climate gets better. He'll do that then make a big for presidency.

Yes, this is a real problem. It will deflate enthusiasm among incumbents and challengers in the party along with depressing fundraising.

Maybe after Scott Walker loses this election he'll take a go at whoever ends up in office.

It might be because he realizes the tide is turning, but... I'd be happy if it's true. Paul Ryan losing power is good for the entire planet. He's up there with Cruz and McConnell in terms of being dishonest in a particularly slimy way, where the lying is obvious but (unlike Trump) has some intelligence and forethought behind it.

Oh please please please let Paul Nehlen get the nomination for his seat. Oh the things I would do to for that to happen.

Split control of the government is good for fiscal restraint. Perhaps having a Dem House will be what's needed to get a decent infrastructure bill passed in the age of Trump.

Me too. With a simple senate majority the only possible SCOTUS justice candidate to get a review in the next two years will be Merrick Garland.

It’s rare we agree, I agree.
We do need a partisan purge hopefully that happens over the next 2 years. Having a handful of shit heads hold up everything it detrimental

I wonder how much stuff like below is behind his decision. He didn't want to be a long term Speaker too.
Ryan is like John McCain, I usually don't like the stuff he supports but I do not question if he is a Patriot.

he top Democrats on six of the House's key committees are appealing directly to Speaker Paul Ryan to help them obtain documents from the Trump administration related to election hacking during the 2016 contest.

I'd like to commend Speaker Ryan for achieving his lifetime goal of diverting the wealth of the nation from the middle class and poors and into the untouchable pockets of the ultra-wealthy oligarchs that pay his real salary, working tirelessly to eradicate the decades-long social programs that made this country the greatest, most educated, most successful place in the world to work and live a decent life, for nearly two generations, and just like a true Republican--scampered out when the scampering's good.

Golden rule of the GOP: never be left holding the bag when the fruits of your wanton destruction come back to tear you apart. Take the profit and run.

Step 1 - Leave with tax cuts on your resume before dems take control and remind everyone that you're a prick.
Step 2 - Immerse your self in think tanks and foundations to generate all the talking points you will need for you presidential run. Get your self seated on a couple of boards. Pop up on foxnews from time to time to keep your name fresh in the minds of Foxtards.
Step 3 - After being immersed in conservative circle jerking for about 2-3 years (enough time to build portfolio of talking points and policy positions that test well with focus groups as well as shake and bake a nice group of donors) announce you are forming an exploratory committe to see if the Nation needs you to run for president to save them from "The left".
Step 4. Run for president. Say tax cuts all the time and dodge all other questions. Say some crap about values and morality to prove that you are not Trump.
Step 5. Rape a deer behind the shed since thats what Paul Ryan does behind closed doors. Sexually assault creatures of the forest.

Have to wonder if Cohen being part of the RNC finance committee and having his offices raided played any part in this....

Now that's interesting. But the rumors of Ryan's departure had been floated about much of last year, at various times. It seems the "fake news" early reporting from "unnamed sources" about his desire to retire wasn't really all that fake. Who knew?!
