Isn't that a similar car to what killed James Dean?

I wouldn't call it at all similar, but the 550 Spyder Dean was driving was in a sense a spiritual predecessor to the Carrera GT that Walker died in - both are limited-production, lightweight, open-top Porsches whose chassis/drivetrain are racing-inspired. The Carrera GT was, however, made 50 years after the 550, so has almost 8 times the horsepower of the 550 (612, to the 550's 78). Obviously that makes it capable of violent acceleration which makes it even more unforgiving of careless or incompetent driving.

Paul wasn't driving.

QFT.

Also we don't know yet what caused this. It's very easy that they were going the speed limit or just 10mph over and lost control. I was in a 45mph zone once (I was probably going about 55) someone in a beater hooptie totally blew a stop sign and forced me to swerve. I went into a spin on a dry day. Luckily I just missed a 6-8" curb going in and then about a half dozen stumps as I went about 50' into the empty lot before I settled. I almost rolled at one point.

If I hit a light pole (which are sometimes designed to break away) and then a tree head on during that, it would have looked just like this scene and I wasn't the one doing anything really wrong.

Even at 45mph I'd be in the same boat. Now I am sure it's possible they were driving too fast...however; we don't know if that speed was the direct cause.

It sucks everyone esp our members flaming Paul Walker when he was not even the driver and someone who is a pretty damned good humanitarian.

Also I don't get how most don't realize that mid/rear engine cars have gas tanks usually up front. In the Carerra GT's design because it's so compact, that gas tank is right at your feet and in the crush zone.

The other driver did not stop and their were no witnesses. The owner of the property was concerned I'd sue them though. The joke I made was "I am just glad they planted those trees in the right spots".

Wow. It's not something I'd want to know as a buyer of these hypercars.

The car separating can actually be a good thing in such an accident. The heavy part of the car that is now behind you becomes detached.

It slows your roll more or less.

Most aircraft have tail assemblies that break off solid too.

The speedster, 550 -> Carrera GT are an evolution. The 550 is a predecessor though, not successor (but I knew what you meant as should anyone trying to post this in grammar Nazi fashion).

not to bring religion into this, but stuff like this is why i became an atheist. how do you explain this to thier children? they probably won't even be able to have a casket funeral with how charred the bodies are. just no explanation for it.

and carrerra gt's are probably the most raw, unforgiving cars there are.

Here is the thing, and most people don't get this. In almost all religions the 'God' in a non-intrusive God. He is not going to play his hand for you.

Everything outside that is just life.

He will indeed need a closed casket.

Why didn't anyone help? The fire looks like it's towards the back, I would at least get closer until I couldn't. I'm not heroic or anything, it seems like a normal human reaction.

Sheriff's department already said speed was a factor. This means, plainly: driver was driving like a maniac on public roads.

They will undoubtedly find out if the many skid marks in the immediate vicinity match to the tires on this or not.
Joy Ride was good.
I also liked dead and life of bobby Z, I thought it was pretty watchable.

Im sure it was WAY too hot for anyone to get remotely close. With a fireball that size and gas fueling it theres no way you could close to that car.

- vid shows the speed limit sign on the ground - now 45mph instead of 30mph. Not that it matters.

- there are dark blankets there - are they covering the bodies? Because you'd figure the ME would've taken them by then regardless of the bodies' conditions.

- no word on whether they were conscious after the crash - the son and someone else tried to free them to no avail - were they struggling in the car trying to get out?

Sadly, most today would rather youtube it than help even in a simple purse snatching or assault. Being that it's really hot and there is a potential to explode...all bets are off.

I have been scolded here for calling 911 and/or getting involved in situations.

The really really sad part is too many don't want people to try and help.

They were unconscious, if not dead outright.

I hit a tree of similar size during a club rally event, and I was out for half a minute or so, and that's with full belts and a helmet, and at a fraction of the speed these cats were traveling at.

It's true. People are big pussies and just hold back and maybe call 911, don't want to get involved in much at all. I'm still shocked a stranger got involved in the bike gang beating in NYC recently, encouraging the thugs to go away.

Not necessarily, but have you never broken any laws?

Most here need to realize 'these fast speeds' the media and sheriff's like to talk about sometimes are not. Just look at how a 'sheriff' determines body damage in an accident report. They like to use $500 a lot for damage well in excess of $5000.

BTW, Speed is always a factor in an accident. If you were traveling at zero miles per hour it can also be.

It was a super car Porsche with in excess of 600hp, it hit something and exploded.

It was clearly speed or possibly rapid acceleration related. Speed being over the speed limit. Pretty easy to tell that the car would handle appropriate 45mph driving just fine, even appropriate 55-60mph it would handle ok IMO. Either they accelerated like a rocket from a stop or slow speed, or they were doing well in excess of 45 IMO. I don't think they were doing a drive anyone here would call appropriate when they crashed. Doesn't mean they deserved death of course.

Anyone who has driven by a fire knows why nobody got near to tear off doors and pull bodies out. Driving from car fires 10-15 ft away with windows up you can still feel the heat.

A bit of a senseless death for a guy who is easy to like/respect, easy to see why it hits hard to hear of the deaths here.

I personally find it sad that two people died, but I find it more sad that all the people crying over the death of a celebrity doesn't give two shits about all the people dying in car crashes each and every day. I don't feel like I'm the crass one for making fun of those people's double standard.

I never said anything about them being celebrities, and I even feel uncomfortable when people celebrate death here through "Darwin award" threads and think the overzealous crew that thinks someone should be shot for jaywalking. I try to avoid those threads, and probably should have just avoided this one as well. Your post was relatively tame compared to the spamming by Thinclient, and the internet junior detective squad.

I'll bow out of this thread now, but just wanted to reply to your post and let you know I was not trying to single you out, and you are off base assuming why I made the post I did.

Straight up bullshit. They absolutely were driving recklessly (and definitely speeding). Complain about people cracking jokes but defending what is clearly the reason for the wreck is just absurd.

Also the fire likely started by the engine. These cars have special fuel tanks that are made to withstand wrecks and not catch on fire, most of the fires on high end sports cars originate from the engine bay.

The comments on youtube, facebook and cnn are much worse. Someone made a paul walker death joke video on youtube.

I guarantee that plenty of the one's on here whining would be making similar jokes about people they didn't like. There's a lot of hypocrites on here.

Some of you people need to stop talking out of your asses so much. They've said they rushed to the car with fire extinguishers but that obviously didn't do anything. Like someone said, if you'd ever actually been near a car fire you'd STFU about people helping. There's no way they could have gotten them out. If they were lucky they died quickly from impact and not from the fire.
