I just received a new HP Pavilion zd7000 notebook. P4 3.0, 1gig mem, GeForce FX Go5700 & XP Pro SP2.

It seems to have heat issues. Just sitting at the desktop, it won't even stay up overnight without crashing & when it tries to reboot, it hangs before hitting Windows. And if I try & run something intensive like Everquest, it won't make it a full hour.

Does anyone else have any experience with this model line? Are you having heat issues. I'm thinking pretty seriously that it may just be defective and it needs to go back. But I'd like to hear from some other folks first... maybe it's a design flaw in this model line & I need to look at some other options?

Thanks in advance.

Does the underside of the machine have proper access to ventilation? In other words, an air clearance should exist between the underportion of the machine and the surface the machine is being used upon to allow air to circulate - both for the sake of the undermounted fans, as well as the casing itself. Have you monitored the operating temperature at idle or under load? Believe there are a number of temperature monitoring applications that function with the ZD7000 - SpeedFan, and Motherboard Monitor (with the ACPI probe, of course) come to mind, but certainly there may be others (am not certain if MobileMeter functions with the ZD7000 line or not).

One must remember as well the ZD7000 utilizes a desktop processor, and thus precautions will undoubtedly need to be addressed, lest serious heating issues occur. Would be remiss if it were not mentioned there is an entire forum dedicated to the ZD7000 line, which can be found here.

If you plan on leaving most any notebook (particularly desktop replacements) on for several hours, some kind of air circulation is necessary. Get one of those notebook cool pads that either have fans built-in circulating air or a cool pad that has ridges in it to allow the heat to dissipate. At the least prop that beast up! Also, I've heard of issues with certain HP's needing their cooling fans repaired at the factory. That was on some of the lower end models, so I don't know if that would effect you.
