antiques roadshow is also completely staged. in fact, pretty much all reality shows include copious amounts of direction and direct staging of scenes.

would you prefer shows like jersey shore where it's just random snippets directly from the lives of retarded people?

From what I can tell, it's not as staged as antique roadshow. Plus, they're not getting sent to jail like these guys: http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cid/arttheft/northamerica/us/militaria/militaria.htm

Lots of the scenes in pawn stars feel really staged though.

Having a pawn shop in Vegas seems a pretty good idea considering there would be all sorts of people trying to pawn off their belongings to go and gamble their life away.

I'm sure there is a lot of competition for this very reason though.

I passed by it in Vegas, the outside looks kinda bland. There is a giant "As seen on TV" sign in front of the building though.

I like it.

The 2 young fat kids are hilarious.

I hate the main guy's laugh, and I'm pretty sure it gets edited in a lot. The oldest guy's monotone voice really grates on my nerves.

I like it too, but the fat kids bug me because they need to lose some weight. Pops is in better shape than they are. : /

Yea seriously the grandfather and dad aren't even that huge. They both look like they are 400+ which is disgusting.

1. Idiot brings in item.
2. Expert tells them it's worth $X.
3. Idiot asks for $X.
4. Retarded laugh guy says "That ain't gonna happen."
5. Idiot accepts $Y or leaves to sell on the internet.

I like this show.

I think it's funny when someone comes in to pawn their prized possession and it's worth $15. The guy selling his fake baseball cards was hilarious! "Well if these cards aren't real, then what is real? Is my wife real?"

I will agree that someone needs to pawn a treadmill for Big Hoss & Chumlee.

makes me wonder if the consultant friends get paid by the consultation or if they get paid a commission if the piece is sold. if i owned the shop, i'd much rather a cut of the profit when the piece is sold, that way money only leaves when i make money. you figure the pieces coming in are more than likely to be fake than the real deal.

Remember that one guy who brought in the ship chronograph and sold it for, I think $500. He was told it'd take a repairman and he has no idea how much that'll be, how much it'll sell and stuff since it appears to be not working.

The repairman comes in, takes a small piece of cardboard out of one of the mechanics and told them it was inserted because this very accurate machine had to be transported without anything being messed up. The thing was actually in great working condition and the shop made bank at thousands of dollars now.

Well, the shop has to hold it while paying interest on money they borrowed to buy it in the first place. They could have broken even also. Do this 100 times and you'll probably have a 20% profit margin on goods sold overr the long term. They low ball because they have to.

Really? Ugh, I hate it. I mean the show itself isn't terrible really, but I'd much rather watch "Modern Marvels" or "How the Earth Was Made" or something like that on History Channel, not a reality show.
There is no reason you should not love this show then. People bring in items from all periods of history, and experts come in to tell how they were used, manufacturered, and you can even see them in action.

I just hope it doesn't turn into an American Choppers, where they changed the show to focus more on the interpersonal drama than actually making the motorcycles.

Yeah I know. Like I said it's a decent show; some of the stuff that people bring in is interesting, like in that one episode an older guy brought in an old (Civil War era?) cannon and they ended up getting an expert to test fire it. But I don't care about a lot of the stupid crap people bring in, or watching them go back-and-forth on price, or silly arguments between the owner and his sons and whatnot. Eh, I guess the show just isn't my thing.

Well, to be honest, at the end of American Choppers the bikes that were being thrown together were so crappy they had to focus on something else.

I'll be in Vegas this weekend and was planning on going over there. My cousin was there a couple months ago and got his photo taken with The Old Man (the only cast member that was there at the time).

Pawn stars has a couple of things going for it that wouldn't be the same for American Choppers:

1 ) The show is only 30 mins long, not an hour
2 ) People always have stuff to sell

Yup... annoys me when the younger son, "Big Hoss" makes some stupid deal for something that doesn't look like it would make money... and then turns around and makes bank.

He bough a non-working motorcycle on one of the episodes for $3500 ... was told it would take like $30k to repair.. or they could auction it. Ended up going to auction and sold for $7500.. part of me wanted it to go for $2000 so that the kid would get his ass reamed for buying crap.

apparently it wasn't crap.

It's a decent show. The merchandise is interesting, the staff is interesting (and watching ChumLee bumble around is amusing), and it's funny to see just how bad some people are at bargaining.

It is a cool show. I thought it was hilarious some guy had an ejection seat from a fighter...IIRC, it was determined as still capable of being "ejected" and the guy was "please don't blow a hole in my roof".

Yes.

After something is already appraised they do the little interview taping. They don't record every single appraisal and then pick out the "good" ones.

Here's a clip from Insomniac from 7 years ago when Dave Attel visited the Pawn Stars place.

Good find! I used to love that show. Dave came to do standup at my college a few years ago, unfortunately he and the audience we both too drunk to really make it work lol.
