I love the idiots that take 20-30% of the value now when they were just told what they could get at auction by an expert.

I like it a lot. I agree that it's like Antiques Roadshow for the 20-40 age group. The guys are all funny because they know their stuff, but still make fun of each other. It's neat to see all of the crazy things that people have stashed in their closet/attic that they know nothing about. They do a really good job of explaining the history behind every item shown.

I'm kind of on the fence about American Pickers. I'm not a huge fan of the guys and the whole "I don't want to sell my stuff because I'm a hoarder" storyline gets old. It also seems like they don't go into much history on a lot of the items they buy.

I have been living in Vegas since 1981 and the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop has saved my @ss from rental evictions due to my stupiditie at the tables when i was young and in my twenties. While the show is scripted all the way down to the price negotiations. The staff personalities remain true. Chumlee is very laid back but they use him on the show for comic relief. Rick is always laughing and you can hear him laugh when he is in the back room of the shop.

I like it too. Even my wife likes it. Lots of interesting items and history.

Just FYI though, the old coke machine and gas pump they bought and "restored" were never really restored. The machines they picked up were different models.

Also, I've read some anecdotes from customers who have been on the show TV and most of it is not staged. The corny joke dialog is fed to them, but that's to be expected. Chum Lee is obviously not that stupid. They do solicit people to bring in large items, but it would be a really boring show if people just brought in Rolexs and tools.

You don't get to be in business as a Pawn Shop owner without knowing who to call to find out if something is real, or how much it's worth.

The "friends" are nothing more than appraisers and antique experts. Nothing wrong with calling them to find out if something is legit or fake... and how much it's worth.

But I wonder do these antiques experts do these appraisals for free or do they get a percentage or a flat fee?

its gotta be flat. you don't really want a percentage for an expert, you really want them to have an incentive to pump value?

some episodes back i'm pretty sure one of the dudes that came in ..i think with a knights helmet was on another show for plastic surgery..quite the addict.

But if you know how auctions work, you have to pay tons of fees and takes months or even years to sell. Plus it might not even sell. So to many people it makes sense especially if they paid so little for something and got 10x it's worth.

yup cold hard cash now vs risk/time. it costs money, its only fair. the other stuff they have to invest thousands fixing or restoring..well the owner wasn't going to take that risk so might as well let someone else do it.

How are they dirt bags??? They buy stuff for as cheap as they can get it. They are a business and they are not forcing anyone to sell them anything.

You've obviously never run a business.

The "American Pickers" would only give twice as much as the seller is asking, when they think theyre going to get a windfall, and to try to get the seller to let 'em buy more.

On Pawn Stars.. the person is only bringing in ONE item... theyre not letting the Pawn Star root around their back yard to find stuff they can sell.

yea i watched a few more episodes trying to get into it. they say plain to the camera that they are using sweetners on small things to break the ice for other things.

still don't like pickers, they go through items so quick you learn nothing about the item other than the price really.
