If you are sellling and don't have an upgraded account (which means that they grab 3% of all your payments) and your payment has come from a credit card, they don't tell you for a week, so you ship what you have sold thinking you have a perfectly fine payment, when you have to upgrade in order to accept it. This seems really unacceptable to me, aside from being very annoying indeed.

This is a good thing to post in the For Sale/Trade forum.

hmm, this must be something they recently changed. the last time i got a cc payment (atleast 6 months ago) it immediately told me it was cc and nagged for the upgrade. this is quite deceptive and unacceptable.... furthers the reasons for me NOT upgrading EVER.

yea, i say that with every sale too but i have still gotten some people that sent with cc. then i had to cancel and tell them to send an echeck or a MO or something. but if what he is saying is true, then you would think you had your money, send the item, then find out its a cc. at this point the buyer has their goods and is giong to be much less likely to want to screw around with changing the payment plan, and might even think you are trying to scam them or something...

I never really trusted them. But anyhow, what does "upgrade" mean, what does it cost the member to do so - whats the difference?

They send immediate e-mails saying that payment has arrived - and a week later e-mails saying they were CC payments. It's deceptive enough to allow payment by CC to accounts that can't accept it. I also checked my account online, and there was no indication it was not from a bank account - no accept (and upgrade)/deny choice; that appeared later too.

Upgrading to a premier account gives you the priviledge of paying Paypal 3% of everything you get. You need this sort of account to take credit card payments.

For those wondering why 3% and who gets it? That is the standard charge that the credit card company for the transaction, so it's not completely Paypal's fault. Most everything in the retail world is marked up another few % to make up for this as most people nowdays use CCs for everything, we just never see it until we're on the seller end.

Oh, I think I misread the details. I thought the charge would apply to all payments, but it seems it only applies to CC payments. In that case I don't quite understand why Paypal is acting as it is.

um, they DO apply it to EVERY incoming transfer. if you have an account which can accept cc payments you pay the 3% on EVERY incoming transfer not just the cc ones.

My non-profit group I belong too - uses paypal for event registration - its - or was 2.7% plus 30 cents on each transaction.

I manage a business - and paypal - is by far the cheapest way to use credit card payments - they don't charge a monthly "conviennce fee' or demand a mimimum amount of sales per month. I could only pray that my clients would pay paypal. They won't do business with me if I demanded cash or MO, and its a pain in the ass to deal with checks - and checks that might bounce - causing me to lose the money of the sale - plus $30. Paypal really isn't that bad.

So can anyone verify that? You've got a CC-capable account and you get a nCC payment, do you still get charged the fee for that particular payment?

They warned me right away the last time I got a CC payment, I have a basic account. All I had to do was refuse the payment.

After the upgrade, you pay the 3% on EVERY incoming transaction.

not true, i have a premier account and almost all of payments into my account are charged the 3%, but that's cause they're almost al CC. The few payments that are non-CC have no fee whatsoever.

paypal fees. It seems to imply that all transactions on a Business or Premier account are charged a percentage, not just CC transactions. This matches up with what I've heard from other Paypal users.

However, to be fair, you do get a few other benefits with a Premier/Business account, including some fraud liability coverage. And 3% is still cheaper than the rates most credit card companies would take directly.

the link isnt working for me, but i checked the fee thing myself and it does say all incoming transactions are charged the fee. but now i dont know why some of my incoming transactions werent charged a fee..... maybe they changed their policy recently because i remember my sister told me a while ago that they only charged for CC payments.

Sorry, the link broke when I was editing my post somehow... paypal fees

I do have to say that if they're not warning you a payment is going to bounce for a week (because of a CC payment being sent to a non-upgraded account), that's pretty lame.
