You'd think that the fact that they capitalize "You" every time and forget the caps on "paypal" that would clue someone off...

Thanks for the info. I think I'll start looking more into that stuff. Thankfully I usually throw those type of e-mails away

Some people reported having their checking account cleaned out after this scam.

This risk is a good reason to NOT give people like PayPal your checking account info. If somebody scams your credit card, you just don't pay and put it in dispute. If somebody scams your checking account, then THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY and you have to beg the bank to give it back to you. Much harder!

If you have checking account info stored with PP, delete it NOW.

Technical question:
How to avoid this (pseudo) impersonation of a site?
(PayPal, PassPort, Amazon, ebay, ...... )
Two way "Challenge and authenticate" (CHAP) using public keys?
Anything out there already available to accomplish the necessary security?

From what I read in the other forums paypal is having a mass exodus. People better transfer any monies from their PayPal accounts to their bank accounts before PayPal goes down. Usually I don't jump on a panic but it sounds like Paypal got really bad hacked.

I'm also reading other forums...I know some people are closing their accounts, but PayPal has what, 11-12 million members? I think it's going to take a thorough investigation into their reprehensible business practices to shut their scam down...I read that a couple of states are looking into PayPal's shady business; probably be at least a few months before anything is done about it, unfortunately.

Rule of thumb for paypal login/etc sites - if it doesn't begin with "https", don't use it.

Go to the profile tab to add/remove credit cards or bank accounts.
I'm not sure what I should remove, but I think I will leave my bank account in for now, since I still want to sell some crap on Ebay...

receiving cash from someone, i go to the website via my own link.

Snyder81 & Others,
Within your profile summary, there should be a link to close your account. I just did it.

Good job. I got this email but I never followed up on it. I hate all the stuff that everybody sends you about how much more you can spend through them.

Thanks

on a similar note, I just got this AOL scam...which is funny, cuz I don't even have an AOL account...

Dear AOL Member,<p>Recently, we attempted to charge you $23.95 for your normal
Unlimited Access plan. This charge did not process as it normally should. This
was most likely caused by one of two problems:<p>· Your credit card may have
been over it's limit on charges, or
· Your credit card has been
canceled.
America Online, Inc. charges a late fee of $35 (US) for all late
payments on accounts. BUT, if you fill out the AOL
http://63.105.6.24/instahost/rollout.html form. This $35 late fee will be
waived, ONLY if you update your account immediately and your account's $35 late
will be erased. If you unfortunately do not have another credit card, you will
have to pay by check for the month that did not get billed and the $35 late fee
will not be waived. You can update your
account..<p>http://63.105.6.24/instahost/rollout.html<p>Gene Austin

I have never "verified" my account...ie: given them my bank account info. My limit was $1000 of which I have around $750 left. Paypal plans to raise this limit for evey unverified account to $2000 at the end of this month. The credit card I use has a very low credit limit plus all the protection afforded by cc companies. It would then seem reasonably safe to continue using Paypal (infrequently I might add) under those circumstances. What do you think?
