Do not reply to this thread! It doesn't belong in this forum. Lock it up and throw out the key!

While this really does not belong here, I think it's worth keeping open and bumped since so many of us A'techers use paypal for selling and buying things.

Should probably be moved to the for sale/trade forum though.

Not only is it a lame post, it's a lame post that has been made before.

I hate it when people don't understand that a "Hot Deal" is a "good price"... not "Bad Price/I got screwed (eg: people saying "NOT HOT!")" "Look out for this and that scam" or crap like that. Yes, the subject matter is close, but it is NOT a HOT DEAL to post that stuff. This belongs in Off-Topic and no place else. Then you will get the people that say "Well I never read those so thanks!".... doesn't make it any more acceptable. You read this forum because you are looking for hot deals, not because you are looking for paypal scams, so don't post them!

This really isn't that hard of a concept.

I agree. Not only have all the good deals stopped being posted here after the damn left-side ad, but it seems every other post is a scam.

Oh and, futhermore, the following comes with about every email from paypal. Anyone who isn't smart enough to read it when they first sign up but smart enough to read every bit of a fraudulent email is just plain stupid, and there is no helping them to begin with. Thanks.

Make sure you never provide your password to fraudulent websites.

A genuine PayPal link will always begin with https://www.paypal.com/.

Remember to check your browser's Address/URL Bar to be sure you are on the real PayPal site.

If the URL does not begin with https://www.paypal.com/, you are not on a PayPal page.

For more information on protecting yourself from fraud, please see the Security Center.

You should never give your PayPal password to anyone.

It is easy to spoof email...this is why PGP and other digital signing methods are important.

Plus...don't be a jackass and send ANY confidential info via email to ANYONE...I mean c'mon...this is why SSL exists on websites people...to secure the communication between your browser and the web server handling the transaction. Email is plaintext to the world (unless you're using encryption of course).

They don't have access to "paypal sources" .. They have access to a mail server that does not require authentication (lots and lots of these around)... You can send mail and make it look like it's from any address but if you know how email woks then you can always tell if it is forged by the headers.

I got one of these last week, tracked down the hosting site & reported them to both the hosting site and to PayPal. It was shut down by the next morning.

However, when I first tracked it down, the text file the hack was login the information to was accessable, at it looked like about ever 10th or 15th person was actually filling out all the information ! There must have been 2-3 dozen people who where stupid enough to fill in the email.

There where about 2-3 times that many that told him where to go and the rest where blank.

I always look at these scams. I am a smart guy, but I won't deny to being socially engineered. So I always look and try to give myself an honest evaluation of wether or not this would have got me. I was looking for the website address that the info was sent too, but didn't see one.

Was this a reply by email request, or a click the link request?
