Hi all,

I need some serious advice regarding building a new PC. I stopped following computer technology for a couple of years, and currently I have no idea about what parts is good, and what is bad. (AMD, or Intel?, which videocard to get, etc,...).

I am not a hardcore gamer, but I do enjoy playing some new games once in a while. Other than that this computer would be dedicated to work (mainly Office, and Internet), and Movies/TV shows watching.

I live in Canada and I would like to use http://www.ncix.com/, and http://www.megacomputer.ca/ (which is a local store, so I don't have to deal with shipping)

Another concern is that I haven't build a PC in a few years, and I was wondering if there is any good Building Guide out there that you would recommend (preferable with a lot of pictures/or video)

Thanks a lot,

I really appreciate any help,

Cloud28

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to mention it, My budget is around 800 - 1000 (I do have a retail copy of XP and Vista, so that is not a problem, I also already have a Monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc)

Case & PSU - Antec Sonata II/Antec EA500w
http://megacomputer.ca/product...24_43&products_id=2516
$145 (I was sure to get the case here, since they usually cost a lot to ship)

CPU - Intel e8400
http://megacomputer.ca/product...46_48&products_id=3282
$200

MoBo - Asus P5Q
http://megacomputer.ca/product...90_95&products_id=3622
$135

RAM - 4GB OCZ
http://megacomputer.ca/product...4_183&products_id=4331
$55

GPU - Sapphire 4870 1gb
http://megacomputer.ca/product...4_173&products_id=4257
$195

HD - WD Caviar Black 1TB
http://megacomputer.ca/product...66_68&products_id=3689
$110

DVD - LG
http://megacomputer.ca/product...51_54&products_id=4441
$30

$10 for a 120mm fan for intake, $30 for an AC Freezer 7 Pro, and you're at $910. No shipping cause its all in stock at your local store, and you can build it tomorrow

Notes: I picked the Antec Sonata/AC Freezer 7 Pro because they're both known for being quiet. Since its less of a zomghardc0re gaming rig I think you'd appreciate the lower noise. However, the 4870 will likely be fairly loud when gaming, so you could get an aftermarket cooler such as an AC Accelero S1, Scythe Musashi, or one of Thermalright's options. I'd go for the Accelero, they can be had for ~$30 CAD, and tack on an antec 92mm tri-cool for adjustability

yh125d, Thanks a lot for the reply!

Should I spend a little more money for a quad core? or is the Intel e8400 good enough?

Thanks

If you like multi tasking, 4 cores are better than 2. Also, some games are more optimized for several cores than others (usually there is a negative correlation between the age of the game and how many cores it uses).
