PC Disposal

I am a Network Admin / PC support person for a school district and it was brought to my attention today that PC disposal prices are rising significantly. I'm told $600 per PC in California, but that is coming from a school superintendent.
I have been told that all future PC bids need to include the cost of disposal in 5-7 years. I haven't asked yet, but I'm confident that not many PC manufacturers are going to want to deal with disposal of my junk PCs especially when it's hard to say what the cost will be in 5 years.

What do you guys do for PC disposal?

600$ .. thats ridiculous, its stupid bureacracy at its worst again .. you can gives those away, many geeks will take those, you can give them to non-profit orgs that need comps .. especially sincethe newer gen of computers will be able to handle just about anything for a long time to come .. .. actaully you can sell those parts, there are places that will buy computer components by the pound only to ship them off to Africa somewhere and smelt them down for the gold content .. .. heh well just my thoughts ..

Yeah. Donate the systems away. Hell, I am the Administrator of a catholic school that would *GREATLY* appreciate any donations...

I'll send you a picture of my certification if you'd like proof.

offer them in the FS/FT forum, heck, people would pay shipping, and you'd get rid of them for FREE, or you could even get away with making a small profit.

i'd buy at least one

Yep, dispose of some in my direction. We've got folks hereabouts so poor they can't afford to change their minds and I won't charge you a thing!

WTF?! That's BS. I build new systems for people for less than that.

As I thought I stated in my post, I'm aware $600 is not accurate, but I figured this was a valid concern that may companies would be dealing with. I expected some responses that actually addressed this concern and not just a bunch of people wanting my junk.

Do you people really thing you want 8-9 year old Compaq P100s with 16MB of ram and 500MB hard drives? Are they even worth the cost of shipping?

Well, first of all, here is some info on the regulations of PC disposal http://www.epa.gov/region02/r3/reqs.htm and a few links to other resources.

Computer Recycling Center

PEP Recycling Center

Recycled PC Parts

R3 PC Where to Recycle

Green Nature

DMC Recycling

I know that Gateway had a Trade-In program that got you something like a $100 rebate when you bought a new machine at one of the " Gateway Country Store " and had them dispose of the old one.

A few others have similar programs.

Hewlett Packard

Micron PC

Dell Computer

I use a local firm that gives pretty decent rates. $12 per PC, $9 per monitor to dispose of my old computers. By old I mean 486's and such. I looked for places that would take them to use them, but of all the places that I checked into not a single one would call me back. The outfit that I used was TechDisposal.
