No doubt, EQ sux, I absolutely hated that game for the 18 months I was slaved to the keyboard playing 4 characters to try and sell them on eBay. Finally saw the light and got the hell out of that one.

Good thing i cashed out before they put that ebay ban on that thang. I made out like a bandit with 1400 dollars in cold hard cash

Yeah I'd have to agree. Why would i want to pay to work even in a game. I don't miss the sh!tty graphics, endless hours of camping and even player politics(<---ghey, hahaha ). Losers, count me out.

Gibzilla:

I agree whole heartadly. What a complete waste of time. I hated the graphics, hated the politics of the game, and the camping for hours doing the same old boring crap. And then waiting for camping spots to open with full servers night after night for the rare finds. It was absolutely the worst exp I have ever had with a game. But it was addictive. I gave it up for the gamecube and i am soo glad I did.

And how many hours did you end up "playing" it to get that $1400?

I don't see how it would matter how many hours it took of him playing. I played Battlefield 1942 for about 200 hours but didnt get anything for that. If this guy got 1400 for playing a game and having fun, thats outstanding, what a return! 1400 tax free to sell a video game account is bad ass no matter how many hours he played it..... jmho

Well, considering he said it wasn't an enjoyable experience... Did you at least enjoy your 200 hours of 1942?

I'm in a similar situation, quit UO after a year and finally quit EverCrack after 18 months, since then I've been on FPS. Nice, addictive but manageable FPS. I've logged maybe 200 hours on Desert Combat, it's quite fun, you just don't get the lows. The capacity to lose days of work and spend a long time hopelessly trying to get back to your body because you've lost everything that you've achieved to a chance train, or PK, or high-level spawn is what makes MMORPGs destructive to your emotional well-being. The capacity they have to completely eclipse your offline life if you get into them is destructive to everything else.

Here's a post I made in a thread about Ragnarok Online, the same principle applies to non MMORPGs:
Not really as addictive as EverCrack or UO, but there is an upside: None of the negativity involved in death.

When you die in RO, you go back to your spawn point with 1 health and everything you had beforehand.

As a person who has spent 8 hours in tears going back trying to find my corpse 7 zones away in EverCrack, and dying every time I get close enough to see my corpse, or spending 5-6 hours running back and forth in UO getting PKed and losing all the work I've put into my characters' stuff for the last month, I find it oddly comforting to find a MMORPG where death means almost nothing. The feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realize you're in a situation where you're going to lose everything, it just doesn't happen in this game, and I love it for that.

Personally, I'm fine with being addicted to games, as long as I don't suddenly have all my achievements(in FPS, your skills, in RPGs, your belongings) lost to me, making weeks of work disappear.

EQ is a total waste of time and should be avoided at all costs.

Hours logged to make 1400 would be astronomical. Then add up the months of bills and the $50 price tag of the game. Then the destructive nature it brings to your relationships and work is rediculous.

There needs to be a EQ support group like AA to the alcoholic. I am glad I was able to walk away from that game.

EQ was fun in the first year or two, after that it became more like a job and was very tedious, hoping for a fun factor playing when the game was still new, they promised the fun factor once you reached the higher levels but that is subjective. Playing a mid level character sucks hard a$$. IMHO they need to make the mid level game more fun. Velious tried to kindle the spirit but just didn't quit do it. Now most players are like ... "Can someone PL (PowerLevel) me to 50+ so I can play in the Planes?" ...

this coming week i'll have 500 DAYS playing that game online since jan 2000. i got laid off from work, and, yea, the game is addicting. i havent had time to look for a job for the past couple years.

the trick to being REALLY uber in mmorpg's is, when you wakeup and crawl out of bed, go boot up the pc BEFORE you go bathroom.

This game will take up all your time cause, you cant really get anywhere if you only play a little of your time. Too many ppl that play 8+ hours a day and they'll make you feel weak and want to try harder.

As a person who has spent 8 hours in tears going back trying to find my corpse 7 zones away

The real sad part is EQ attracts the type of people that would cry over a computer game. I've played off and on since release and have never experienced an "addiction" to it (which in medical terms I believe is the wrong concept, one doesn't get addicted, one becomes obsessed in this case, as with gambling).

There are ways around all of the faults mentioned besides the high end politics if you are creative. Then again this is a 24/7 online game so I expected quite a bit of politics and social strife going in, and have had quite a bit of fun with it.

It's cheap entertainment and I find it fun, but if you have obsessive tendencies you may want to stay away...
