PC games just arent fun anymore...

I got my TRS-80 model 1 in 1978 and Atari 800 in 1980. I was also doing game programming from '80 - '87 for Adventure International, Simulations Canada and KrenTek but then went to college in '87 and have been working as a DOS and Windows applications developer since college.

I've thought about working in game programming but it's brutal hours for low pay at companies that often don't have enough business sense and go bankrupt. So instead I work at a startup company for long hours at pretty good pay

PC gaming is still fun for me after 23 years (yikes!), I just wish I had more time for it.

I don't know, sometimes the classics are fun to go back to.
For example:
I had my whole family together for the holidays and I dled a Commodore 64 emulator!!!! We played Hardball, Spyhunter and Red Storm Rising all week

yeah, pc games suck...wanna send yours to me free of charge? j/k but i see what you are saying. the way i got around the occasional monotony of an fps game is to load up UT with friends at school or other people i know. makes it more of a goof-off than a random clickfest.

For me games are still good but I am getting older and other responsabilities kill my enjoyment of games today. I used to love playing long sessions of Civ III and Star Control II, but now I can barely play a game for an hour without feeling stress about a thousand other things I should be doing. I hope I can enjoy games like I used!

I actually tried playing MUD's again a couple days ago, but I kept on getting thoughts of work, school, housekeeping and all sorts of crap that I couldn't enjoy myself .

I can't even enjoy a good book nowadays I am going to bed reading Cisco books and reading Unix books on the train and the cabling books at work. I do enjoy the stuff, but when it becomes work the hobby feeling goes away. Oh well, I guess I need to take a chill pill.

LOL, I meant Civ 1 of course . I had my first all-nighter playing that game.

i think the challenge for game makers in the future will not be entirely new ideas but
nuaces within genres of games that make the game fun to play and worth your time to
get skilled at. Starcraft and Counterstrike are examples of this. These games are so well
balanced that even though the physical elements of the game are very standard, the
game has a new allure every time i play. the team dynamic, etc

sometimes excessive eye candy can get in the way, and sometimes simple is better, building
out of the old instead of always trying to reinvent the wheel

also, think of life before computers or board games all you had as a child was your
imagination and maybe a teenage mutant ninja turtle or two =)

Been playing games since the BBC-b. Still love them, some better than others. Am finding that I need to play on-line games to keep them interesting though. but as long as games Deus Ex and Op. Flashpoint are being made I think I'll go on enjoying PC games for along time to come.

And why, oh why did they have to release Civ II just before my finals at Uni

I don't understand this, I have been playing PC games for 15 years and I think they are better then ever. I do tend to get bored with singleplayer games more then I use to, but sit me in front of a multiplayer UT, Quake3 or RTCW and I could play till Hell freezes over. I mean honestly how could anyone not like a good multiplayer game of RTCW. The game rocks!!!

Problem is that today the games are more about looking good then playing good!!

Taking out a few refreshing titles every so often, everything else is just a remake of something else...
they even use the same game engines... what would one expect...

I like Deus Ex a lot because I could play it in different ways. But for instance Max Payne has nothing
new to offer (even that bullet time thing. I didn't use it much) I completed it in around 12/15 hours
and when I was done the feelling was "where's the rest??"

The game I'm now playing more often is "Heroes of Might and Magic 3", almost the same as 2, but
with some nice new features....
