PC Gaming Doom & Gloom Thread

This is a question rather than an opinion...
On E3 this year there were much less exciting news and/or less new games for pc, and last year there were less than the year before that (so I've read...). Am I just not well informed, or the industry is really focusing its efforts on platform games these days? If its true its sort of sad, because though platform games are fun, they can never match the complexity levels in terms of graphics and sophistication of a pc game.

this seems far better suited in PC gaming then Video
-so i am moving it
--Graphics Moderator apoppin

I am merging all of the active "PC Gaming is doomed" threads into this one, no reason to have this many threads on the same subject with basically the same replies.

I added the topic summary "PC Gaming Doom & Gloom Thread" to reflect this.

UPDATE: Due to excessive length, a similar discussion is now occurring here.

Well at least a couple from that list are interesting.

TF2/HL2 ep2 are the only ones exciting. Perhaps Crysis depending on how it actually is..cause we all know graphics does not equal fun.

If you are into MMO some good ones coming out last of 2007/early 2008.

I've been waiting forever now for UT3, hopefully it'll be here soon, and wont disappoint us.
One of my concerns when posting this thread was also, how hardware like cpus, gpus, mobo's chipsets, ram etc. gets faster and better, to the point where I'm not sure that its actually worth the money anymore, if no one bothers to compile software which will take advantage of all of these goodies, other than benchmark utilities, but thats lame i.e most of us don't buy a computer just to enjoy it superior benchmark performance.
I remember a while (some years) back reading about how games would look in the future (which is basically now...), and how people said that in the future, other than amazing graphics, you'll be able to interact with all the objects on your screen, not only break bottles or lamps, and other obvious things, they called it realistic physics, where's that I ask? Now that we have the hardware to support it. Where's the AI they all spoke of, they said enemies/allies will be able to think in much deeper ways. These things are big advantages that pc can support, but we don't see them in practice yet.

Its very simple. Only a small % of PCs have the necessary hardware to support those features. If only 10%, or less, of the total available market boasts the required hardware, it doesn't make much sense for the developer to spend the time writing the required code. A quick look at Valve's Hardware survey will tell you that most people are still running anemic 6600s. I work with a number of people who run GF 5200s, and refuse to upgrade.

An advantage of console development is that the hardware always stays mostly the same throughout the life span of the console, makes it easy for developers to code for. It usually only takes a few months for PCs to leapfrog the current console generation in terms of processing power. PCs have been more powerful than the 360 and PS3 for months now, if you're willing to pay for it.

Like I said in another thread somewhere: Have you ever played Far Cry?
It kicked ass, and Crysis is from the same developer. Crytek will not disappoint.

I have a PC. Like consoles, it plays games. Unlike consoles, it's upgradeable, modular and runs applications. Why on earth would I buy a console? PC gaming sure isn't dead for me, and never will be.

Dragon Age, WarHammer Online and the expansion pack for NWN2 are the only games that I am looking forward to and they are all PC exclusives (so far).

another simple fact.... all console games are made in a PC, then they get recoded to fit the console size.

so whatever you console can play, your PC can play it as well..... with the help of some EMU

What are you talking about? The games coming out over the next two years are so are some of the most anticipated games in recent memory:

Hellgate London
Crysis
BioShock
Force Unleashed
Starcraft 2
HL2: EP2
Quake Wars
Space Siege
Call of Duty 4

I can't remember a time when I have had so many anticipated games on my watch list.

Well, I think the reason a lot of people found it boring is because it wasn't 100% linear. You could take your own path on the maps. A lot of people want to be shepherd through their games, so naturally, they would not like this type of game. If you like games that tell you where to go without the possibility of going elsewhere, then Far Cry won't be high on your list and probably Crysis will not be high on your list either.

I believe Force Unleashed is console only.

I think lots of these type of games are becoming boring because it tends to be a rehash of the same old thing. Get a task, kill bad guys on the way, get another task, kill more bad guys on the way, and on and on until the boss fight.

I liked Far Cry quite a bit, but mostly because exploring the world was so much fun. I just got around to playing Quake 4 - what a snooze fest that was. Doom 3 was no better and neither was Half Life 2.

One of the best single player games I've played in recent years was Vampires Bloodlines.

I'm about to play FEAR, but that's probably going to be another borefest. At least UT2004 multiplayer is still lots of fun for me. Looking forward to UT3 multi.

I agree. Story was so so, I get better plots from watching "SciFi Original Movies" and better (voice) acting skills in The Howling 4. It still had fun moments though.

I kind of agree on Q4 and D3, but HL2 was an amazing game on so many fronts..

Are pc games dying ?
yes they are.

Its economics.
I think it was John Carmack at Id software that said they really liked the pc market but that in order to stay in business it just wasn't possible to do only pc games anymore.

There is more money in console gaming, less headaches with hardware, and its not pirated as much as pc gaming.

I love pc gaming and theres some games that are only good on the pc, but I can also see why alot of developers want to go with consoles.
