Personal Computers will exist 100 years from now.
They might be the size of a die and project the display and keyboard with a holograph, but they will be around.

In 100 years kids will not even know what a "console" was.

Do you think people will not be playing games in 2100?

100 yrs?
At this rate, considering cell phones and all, I'd give it 10yrs tops before we have computers like that in the mainstream.

I'd expect VR in 100 years, with a direct brain interface.

Do you really think that it is a good idea to play direct brain interface games made by EA and Atari? Think of what their crashes / bugs could do to you with that kind of interface!

Not to mention the hackers going, 'Now what could I do with that....?' And then you'd have people hawking Norton for your Brain 5.7. Etc.

Vista killed computer gaming for me. I am never going to install it, and once XP is no longer a viable platform I am dumping my desktop and doing everything on Apple notebooks. I think computer gaming will go strong for a long time, but personally have lost all interest in Microsoft's platforms and am not going to keep them around for the sole purpose of gaming.

I just put together a killer rig back in December and it was so sad watching the 360 get a slew of great titles while the PC stuff trickled in. Microsoft's Games for Windows nonsense is not helping jack squat. It's just a lousy-ass way to try and get people on Vista.

I have a Vista dev machine at work and use it 20% of the time. I just don't like it at all. At home I have a PC and a MacBook Pro, so I am 50% there.

It's just my opinion. I don't think PC gaming is dying, but a lot of people I talk to are at the same crossroad as me.

I saw a paraplegic? guy the other night, that has a microchip brain implant that lets him control a cursor just by thinking about it. So they are taking baby steps already in direct brain interfacing.

clearly it is your opinion ... but you have no experience GAMING with it, do you?

i have dual booted for well over a month; extensively tested and benched Vista vs. XP for gaming; and will dump XP ... Vista is better, in my opinion

PC gaming is not dying .... it is headed for a renaissance

Exactly. And it's merely an output, so it's not like they can hack into your brain.
The direct brain interface now is a pretty simple concept actually. All they do is monitor what parts of your brain lights up when you think of certain things, and it sets it so that whenenver it detects that part of your brain showing activity, it'll create an action such as moving a cursor and such.

Now my gaming focus is somewhat narrow, but the game tech forums for my favorites generally report a 5-10% decrease in performance when switching to Vista. Given Microsoft's track record, There is no way I will adopt Vista for at least a year, and I can get a free copy....

Too many chances for Vista to break things, and too little advantage for my gaming, just yet.

as i said i can prove it ... Vista is no slower nor less stable then XP

let's see your "links" to a 5-10% decrease in performance ... something relatively new, please.

but then again, i really don't care if you do or don't adopt Vista now
.... i felt exactly like you did 2 months ago.

Well I guess that explains the crappy ports to the PC then??

all your "arm twisting" was in vain
--RC2 left a bad taste in my mouth [my fault - old HW]

it took actual experience with Vista to completely change my mind
-extensive benchmarking vs. XP with both the 2900xt and 8800GTS-640 also helped confirm Vista's stability and maturity quickly for me

--So nothing you or i are gonna say is going to make any difference to people who haven't experienced Vista for themselves.

no idea, shortylickens ... i finished all of those old games years ago
[at least the ones i wanted to play way back then]

How does XP do with old - now ancient - games?
-not so well as i remember ... i HAD to dual-boot with Win98 for a long time ... i.e. SS2 had big issues and need a major workaround for XP

Now how well does the DX10 pathway run in XP for the newest games?

Can't say the same for you guys, but its a dying breed for me. Mostly because of the cost of entry and the fact that most PC games now a days are ports that aren't that optimized. Or because the dev isn't setting the bar high in terms of requirements in order to sell more copies. Couple that with insane GPU costs on the high end and mundane price/performance on the midrange to low end....well you get the picture.

I for one love PC gaming, but in order to keep me in it, nvidia and ATI are gonna have to get with the program. When the cost of a video card alone trumps a console that will last what...4 to 5 years on average??? To try and get 4-5 years out of a gaming PC is almost assinine LOL

PC gaming is still going strong for me, but I mostly play older titles. A lot of modern games have left me disappointed with their technical problems (both in terms of performance and stability) and intrusive DRM schemes.

I'm playing Splinter Cell: Double Agent now. It's actually a pretty good game and runs better than the demo had me believe, but I've never seen anything that screams "console port" as blatantly as this does. There are a horrendous number of glitches, odd control schemes and simply poor design decisions in all the menus and ingame interfaces. It's obvious that the whole thing was designed for the 360. The game also crashes to Windows fairly often and has a physics synchronization problem somewhat like the D3 engine, but worse. To add to that, the stealth mechanics are considerably dumbed down from the previous titles. It's sad to see all this crap after the extremely well polished Chaos Theory.

You know what's funny, is this thread comes up every year, and every year the same comments are made. I thnk it's here to stay. It may be only a niche hobby as games are kind of expensive and the industry has not completely taken off such as consoles. But the numbers are solid or it would have died 8/9 years ago (or since) as people predicted. But the age group is now a solid 25 - 45 yr olds who have the money to buy their games and buy/build their systems. So as long as the industry is supported (which it appears to be) then it's status quo.

I did go back and check up, and you are correct. With the advent of better drivers in the last month or two, the performance is roughly equal now. Still about a 50/50 split on people choosing Vista/XP. I am not going to, due to problems with some audio software and hardware. I will bite the bullet when some game with stellar play comes out and forces me to. Eye Candy is not enough.
