January 6, 2012 - Valve® today announced the 2011 growth data for Steam, a leading platform for PC & Mac games and digital entertainment.

During 2011 the platform grew to offer over 1,800 games to over 40 million accounts. Year-over-year unit sales increased by more than 100% for the seventh straight year, and during the 2011 Holiday Sale Steam's simultaneous user number eclipsed the 5 million player mark.

Meanwhile Steam doubled the amount of content delivered in 2011 vs. 2010, serving over 780 Petabytes of data to gamers around the world. To meet the increasing demand for games and services on the platform, the Steam infrastructure more than doubled its service capacity and a new content delivery architecture was deployed to improve user download rates.

Over 14.5 mil copies of Steamworks games were registered during the year, a 67% increase over 2010. Steamworks titles shipped during 2011 include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution , and more. Since the suite of services was released three years ago, Steamworks has shipped in over 400 games.

"Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Support for in-game item trading prompted the exchange of over 19 million items. Support for Free to Play (FTP) games, launched in June, has spurred the launch of 18 FTP titles on Steam, with more coming in 2012. Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house."

Between movie streaming, game updates, Netflix, and Steam sales; I came awfully close to my data cap of 250GB last month. In the last 85 days I've used 389GB.

I thought in the PC world:
FTP = file transfer protocol
F2P = free to play

Impressive numbers though. I figured on growth but 100% unit sale increase is impressive.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. I remember seeing ~3 million concurrent users on Steam last year and thought that was cool. Now it's at ~4 million.

Pretty good stuff. With Steam publishing these types of numbers, hopefully it will "convince" certain developers and publishers that releasing to the PC market as an afterthought is a mistake and they're leaving money on the table. There's clearly plenty of paying customers out there if Steam has 40MM accounts.

No it isn't. This time, steam is offering concrete numbers, which it almost never does. This tread is not anecdotal conjectures hurled around, its facts.

You can have a expanding business in a dead market. Steam's number are great for steam but it really doesn't say anything about PC gaming as a whole.

It's great and all but ... where is Episode 3? *sob*

Not as much incentive when you're making money hand over fist through small percentages of OTHER people's games. We'll be waiting a while still.

So you think PC gaming is dead/dying?

No, I don't. I should have been clear about that. I believe that companies that produce a well made PC game can still make a lot of money in the market.

That's true, but the last marketing survey I read projected within 4 years PC game sales will surpass those of consoles. Not exactly surprising considering the number of PCs worldwide is expected to double in the next ten years and PC gaming hardware sales hit a record 2 billion dollars last year. To even suggest for a moment that PC gaming is a dead market is laughable.

I spent $70 on games on Steam after Christmas. I own consoles as well but spend too much $$ on those damn Steam sales.

I have noticed in the last 6 months or so more little issues coming up with steam than i had in the last 3+ years.

This week cloud storage was down for 3 days, plus not being able to launch games for 24 hours just this week oddly enough.

But, that steam holiday sale made up for any minor annoyance.
