The PC industry sucks now, at least for FPSs. It's too mainstream, too easy, and good releases are released far apart. Especially exclusives; they are almost non-existant. It's a real shame. I moved primarily to consoles, but I don't think I left the industry... the industry left me.

Well... to be honest I own Blood Money but can't play it due to my 9200. However, I've watched others play it and it seems to be mostly true to the formula of the first three. Even if it really is horrible, five games in four years isn't too bad.

1992: Ultima Underworld, Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos, and Wolfenstein 3D.
1993: Doom.
1994: Marathon and System Shock.
1995: Marathon 2: Durandal, Crusader: No Remorse, and Warcraft II.
1996: Marathon: Infinity, Quake, and Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal.
1997: Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny.
1998: Half-Life.
1999: System Shock II and Half Life: Opposing Force.
2000: Baldur's Gate II, Diablo II, Deus Ex.
2001:
2002: Mafia, Warcraft III, and Hitman 2: Silent Assassin.
2003: Deus Ex 2 and Warcraft III: Throne of Chaos.
2004: Far Cry, Hitman: Contracts, and Half-Life 2.
2005: FEAR.
2006: Oblivon and Hitman: Blood Money.

Aside from 2005, those years are pretty good. Not the best (that honor goes to 1995 and 2000) but still good.

Movie-based games usually don't appeal to me, but the fact that you like Deus Ex (best game ever), The Marathon Trilogy (#6, #2, and #1x respectively), and System Shock 2 (#4) makes me want to check it out. What's it like?

EDIT: There's nothing wrong with Far Cry, aside from a couple really hard levels.

Why exactly did you think Hitman: Blood Money sucked?

I've played all the Hitman games and am very pleased with Blood Money. I've finished it and still enjoy playing it. It has solid gameplay, more than acceptable AI, looks very nice visually (with everything maxed out), has missions that take place in varied and interesting locales, and it brought quite a few new things to the table, such as: Very customizable weapons, throw-able weapons, hand to hand combat, a notoriety system that is actually pretty cool, the ability to take out your target with an "accident", etc.

I think it's an excellent game.

The only one I've played before Blood Money was Silent Assassin.

Blood Money had clumbsy controls. In terms of gameplay, didn't offer anything new. I didn't like the way the story was presented (Although the end was cool as hell). AI still hasn't changed. It's been years, they could've done something. I didn't think all levels were good. This opinion isn't in comparison with Silent Assassin. There were a few nice ones and 1 or 2 sexy ones, but the rest was mediocre.

Company of Heroes just came out, so did Lego Star Wars 2, and next week GTR 2 comes out. Looks to me like there's usually at least one decent game out almost every week.

As far as FPSs (and TPSs) go, my favorite game is Deus Ex by a long way, followed by Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Thief 2, Unreal and Chronicles of Riddick. System Shock 2 and DXIW were also very good.

I thought Half Life 2 was terrible, even leaving the graphics aside. Actually, it was probably the worst game I've played in the last several years, all things considered. I got really bored of it halfway through and only mustered the will to complete it since everyone was talking about it at the time.

I got into Oblivion during the begining summer but had to stop for projects. I'm giving Prey a shot, but I'm not finding much innovation. I've given up hope on any good NHL game coming back to the PC since EA's NHL 2004.

It seems there a quality xbox game being released at least every other month. If you look at the reviews for xbox games, there's a lot more being scored above an 8 on a consistent basis than PC games.

You mentioned Oblivion - get BACK into it. it took me 1016 hours to *finish* it with everything maxed at Level 92 [no cheats]. Extraordinary game.

Oblivion warms the cockles of my .

Best PC games I've played recently (in no particular order):
- WarHammer 40K: Dawn of War (plus Winter Assault expansion)
- The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
- S.W.A.T. 4 (plus expansion) <-- not really new

Biggest disappointments for me:
- Prey
- WoW

Aww man c'mon. I turned 30 in August. I'm a marrried , own a home , work full time. and have other hobbies. My car , and motorcycle...and I'm really into working on my house , and renovating. But I think I'll always play games. I've got 2 ps-2's a gamecube , just recently got my hands on a xbox 360 and of course , my pc. The break from reality is great at times and I really look forward to times when I can just kick back in my office with the door closed , and turn the volume up on and start playin. Great way to spend extra time when you don't feel like doing anything else. Heck , it's saved me more money than I probably realize because I don't go out partying like I used to either!

Wow... you guys are big on Riddick. I found it to be rather tedious and boring and never finished it. Same with Oblivion. After playing WoW I just found Oblivion simply boring... and spare me the speeches about how the two are different types of games, I realize this. I just kept finding myself wishing there were other other real human players in the world to interact with.

You got me here on this one too. Riddick was definitley far from a good FPS. Was it pretty looking and fun for melee combat - yes. Was it anything more? I actually thought that the combat and shooting in it felt a little off. It felt cheesy and hokey when actually gunbattling.

and yes, I've played oblivion for about 18 hours now and it's not that great for me. I find myself almost lonely in a sense that I'm going to spend all night talking to non human players. Plus - theres no PVP ! which is obviously the best part about killing all of those damn monsters and going on those damn quests - so that you can kill people afterwards.

loved 'riddick'

it takes a "fresh approach" to the FPS . . . it doesn't do ANYthing new , , , just REworks the FPS.

e.g. instead of that STUPID "light gem" to show if you are "hidden" or not, 'Riddick' changes the entire scene to that weird blue that does the same thing - but with better "immersion".

The plot was better than ANY riddick movie, the Voice Acting TOP-notch, and gameplay including weapons was superb.

If you don't like Oblivion you are probably either a "pure FPSer or RPGer only" . . . these are the people that are most disappointed with it. It is Neither and a combination of both types of game - an "Action/adventure Fantasy Game with RPG elements".

if you miss MMO . . . Oblivion will not suffice. The NPC AI got dumbed-down rather severely in the final release. Maybe ES:VII. will really compete with "people".

For what it is - what the Devs intended - it is superb.

Well, I am a big fan of FPS games, but I'm also a fan of action games (e.g. God of War). I used to be a big fan of Japanese/console RPGs back in the SNES days. Though during the PSX/N64 era I started gravitating to more toward action heavy genres.... games that can be played for <30 minutes at a time and something actually be accomplished.

But then I was sucked into Diablo II and then WoW. I had to force myself to quit WoW after a few months though because it was too much of a time killer. I love the game, but it just takes up too much time.

So I picked up Oblivion hoping for a good single player experience somewhat similar to WoW. Yeah, the fighting is different, but you still go around and pick up quests to complete... Oblivion even makes a similar sound when you pick up a new quest... LOL. The problem was I just quickly found myself bored. The world felt so empty without the hundreds of human players running around. I guess I just really like the interaction with other players... makes the world more "alive" than just having NPCs with all their scripted speech. There's also that added element of danger when questing in neutral or enemy territory knowing that you could be attacked by the other faction at any time. I'm also a big fan of co-op games in any genre, and I missed not being able to take on quests with other players.

That pretty much sums up why I found Oblivion to be a disappointment. It doesn't have the heavy action of the normal genres I play and it doesn't have many of the elements that drew me into the WoW world.

Ironically now that I have the hardware, it seems the PC gaming scene is in bad shape. I'm digging through reviews on IGN and GameSpot and it seems like nothing good has been released in a long while. What gives? Has everyone ditched their PC's in favor of a console?

Please tell me theres hope.

notgoingtoflameyounotgoingtoflameyounotgoingtoflameyoudespiteyourcluelessness.

ok. Yes, there is hope.

The PC gaming scene is alive and well and has very much been growing rather than diminishing. As a matter of fact, it has grown so much that before I can give you a list of games to play you need to provide me with some genre's that you like.

There are a huge stack of blockbusters out there for FPSs, RPGs (mmorpgs in particular have gone gangbusters), RTS etc..

k, good list for starters.

As always consoles do typically lead the pack on sports games...no news there. But for your other favorites:

Tribes Vengeance rocks! If you digged Tribes 1/2 then this is for you...expect a newbie butt kicking unlike any other online game until you get ramped up.
Battlefield 2 is a great improvement on 1942. I'm not a huge fan of 2 though.
Instead of Prey, maybe try Quake 4. Doom 3 is a fav or mine but others are lukewarm on it. Q4 gives those drenching graphics with fast gameplay.
Unreal 2004 is still a great game but a bit behind the times. 2007 will be out soon. Probably skip unreal until

Other FPS that you MUST play:
Halflife 2, FEAR.

For me I have a hard time committing to a long game. I picked up Sin Episodes Emergence when it was $10 at Circuit City and found it enjoyable enough. All the web reviews gave it mediocre reviews, though.

FYI, (I just found this out), the voice for Jessica is the same as Kortana (sp?) of Halo fame.
