PC Gaming vs Console Gaming...

I'm just curious to see if console gaming will ever cause an end to PC gaming? The reason I am asking is the processing power in PS3 and XBox360 is extremely powerful. The next generation will only grow on that and improve the GPU.

Is there any chance that the next gen will supplant PC gaming?

If by "extremely powerful" you mean "two generations behind current PCs" then I agree. Yes, console gaming will eventually completely kill PC gaming, but not because of the processing power of the consoles.

My wifes old computer collecting dust in the closet from 2007 has more processing and graphics power than the current consoles. That said, I dont believe that is what will kill PC gaming.

The higher costs, the piracy, the ease of use of consoles, and the closed dev environment will kill PC gaming.

But I think PC gaming will never truely die, it will evolve into an online community. MMORPGs will continue to thrive on PCs imo.

No, not unless every console comes with a keyboard and mouse, a free modding community, and upgradable graphics slots. They each have their niche, FPS, MMO, Strategy games all better on the PC. Platformers, 3rd person shooters, rpgs, Party games (Rock Band, Mario Party etc) are arguably better on a console.

Yes PC gaming will eventually be killed. Piracy rates are already making developers think twice about developing for the PC, and eventually it will mark the end of PC gaming.

Also, I can already tell this thread is going to end well.

I see where this thread is going...the OP is "MacAttack" so he is asking if consoles will suppant PC gaming (read: Windows-based PCs) and a new panacea of Mac gaming will emerge (because they are not "PCs".).

Note to mods: Can we automate a process to find the keyword of "piracy" and auto-lock those threads in PC Gaming? Many a good thread has been slaughtered by this discussion over and over again.

WoW isn't going broke now is it. Maybe the pc industry will eventually move to subscription gaming for content, but until PCs disappear, PC gaming won't disappear. As long as there is profit to be made, it will remain.

No.

For as long as PC's (even macs) are in wide spread use there is a market, however large or small it may become, in which people can make money creating games for they will make games for it.

Consoles are computers built for gaming only. Should laptops drop drastically in price and a maintenance free OS come about (plug & play) I think console gaming will die.

I guess I hit a sore spot with many. For others with valid points, thank you.

Moderators. Please close this down. I think I got the answer I was looking for through the dribble.

NO WAY... places like GameStop etc will let you think this is true by having bastard shelves for the "DEAD PC" games.

The method of distribution is about the only thing you can expect to change. STEAM / IMPULSE are signs of this. The piracy argument is getting old and not holding much ground anymore since most games are sold via digital distribution now and most games need you to authenticate with a 3rd party or be logged in to even play against other players.

Also to combat piracy the sales model is swinging away from the greed of the single point of sale margin as Steam games are regularly testing the waters with outrageously cheap prices on games. For example: L4D for $24 for one weekend when it was still a $49 game easily? You won't find this on the console.

PC gaming is just dandy and the day I buy a console is the day they stop making newer and faster PC parts.... when is that gonna happen? UM not anywhere in the near future....

IMHO what will happen is the platforms will end up moving more toward each other .... you are already seeing this in cross platform online gaming.

The only way I'd even consider a console as my main rig is if it had as the above poster stated customizability, the ability to mod, AND #1 KB/Mouse support in EVERY game.

Umm try 3 generations and now 4 since ATI released their new cards already. PC get told every console generation that it's going to die cus of a new console and it's still here. Consoles can never keep up with PC's.

PC and console gaming each have their advantages. Many people prefer console gaming because it is so simple, but PC gaming is nice in many ways too. Maybe more of a niche but that doesn't mean it'll die out. I for one enjoy both for different types of games.

Also hasn't this thread been done before, many, many times?

PC hardware is generations ahead but asside from a few titles the consoles are going to have the best looking games simply due to exclusivity...and certainly will look consistently better due to larger budgets. I mean look at Crysis, the indoor areas look like a 2004 indie game; games like Killzone 2 or Bioshock run in circles around it.

The current consoles aren't powerful. The are completely outdated by PC standards. The 360 has the equivalent of an 1800 series graphics card. The PC is now five generations ahead. The 360 can't even do graphic intense games at a 720p, the 5870 can easily run three monitors at 1920 x 1200 at higher settings. The 360 CPU is even worse. It's cores are comparable to an old Apple G4 processor. For memory the consoles only have 256mb of system memory. When it comes to hard drive space the consoles are even further behind. On top of that the 360 was less reliable than the worst made PC.

The next generation of consoles aren't even going to be as close to the PC when they come out as the last generation, because Nintendo with the weakest powered console completely dominated this generation. Not only did they dominate sales, they also made money on every console sold. MS and Sony lost billions this generation.

Consoles are dead. At least consoles that try to compete with the PC. Next generation consoles are going casual. The only hardcore gaming will be PC gaming.

I still think that Consoles are becoming more and more like PC's anyways. Here is a question, would it be hard for PC's to eventually have the ability to play a console game without installing but playing off the disk instead? I am sure there are all kinds of complications with that but if the support was provided, it would be a great way for PC Gamers to have their choice to play certain console games. Then we could see who are better FPS players, Console's or PC's.

Also, as long as MMO's and RTS games are popular, I think that the PC will continue to have great influence on the developers still investing in the PC platform for many years to come. Also, there is no comparison on consoles to the MOD community associated with PC games.
