PC Gurus please help

I had 2 HDs on my old pc(win XP). About 2 weeks back I took out one HD and kept it inside a drawer(nice cool place). Today I bought a new pc(win XP) and installed that HD in it. Now my new pc has a 36G SATA HD as the primary disk. I installed the old ATA HD as a master and connected it on the second IDE slot. My new pc can recognise the HD, assigns a new drive name E: but when I double click on it, it asks me to format it. When I right click on it and select properties, it says the HD is in RAW format. What did I do wrong, and how can I resolve it. I am seriously scared, all my college project work is on this HD. Please help. Any help/info welcome.

Try looking for some partition recovery software. Chances are though, with out paying for a proffesional data recovery service, you won't be able to get back you data.

there was a thread like this a few days ago...i cant find it anymore.

Use a program like partitionmagic 8.0. the solution the guy had was to use the option "split partition" in partitionmagic which somehow enabled him to copy/save the files. (this solution sounded weird to me, but...well it worked for him)

I suggested that maybe his MBR (master boot record) is shot and suggested that he should re-install a new MBR with a tool called
"BootIt NG"
www.terrabyteunlimited.com which allows to create a new MBR (as far as i know)

play around with that (or try partitionmagic) like the other guy did and try to rescue your data.
