PC keeps going to sleep

Q6600, 4GB RAM, Radeon 6850, Vista 64. Ever since a couple weeks ago, my "high performance" plan (or any other plan) I set to NEVER sleep keeps getting changed to 30 min sleep (and 30 minute monitor off) by itself in power options. Other plans are doing the same. I also created a custom plan and it even changed that after a while. I've been trying to keep an eye on what I do last before it sleeps but there's nothing remarkable. Last couple days it hadn't happened but today again it started doing it, with no difference in daily activities or running apps.

I even enabled User Access Controls again to see if something is changing it and it never warned me of changes yet it still changed. I know it's sleep because hitting the mouse button wakes it up.

I don't want sleep set because I like the HDDs to be always-on for longevity. I ran malwarebytes and ccleaner - no problems. I have no screensaver set, nothing obvious in BIOS, and can't think of any programs that would take over the sleep setting. Google search says this may be a bug in the OS but there's no fix?

^ it's not after reboot though - I would make sure it's set back to NEVER sleep, then go away and it idles, then use it, then the next time I idle (like eating a quick dinner) I would come back to find it asleep. I am the only one with access to the machine.

Even after a reboot on purpose I checked the setting and it did not reset to 30 mins sleep... it was still on NEVER.

You might take a look at this as it kind of sounds like it might be what is happening in your case (i.e. the power plan not updating to reflect your changes):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935799

Have you done a BIOS update recently that would have reset all of the power saving modes in the system BIOS? Finally, as a last resort, it could also be an early side effect of a power supply that is beginning to fail.

Is there any other software that is controlling the power functions?

Is it truly asleep or is the display simply off? That is a different setting. Reason I mention this is because I also run a Q6600 machine with Win 7 and 8.1. The monitor is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, however, the system does not sleep. Just the display. And, that is a good thing.

- the power plan I update does reflect my changes (I go back in to verify) since it is not always going to sleep after 30 minutes. When it does sleep, something is changing it. It stayed on throughout the night last night which is good. Nothing has changed it yet today. The randomness of this is why it's been so hard to troubleshoot. I did verify with powercfg.exe that high performance is the active plan, and it's set to NEVER sleep.

- I am sure it is going into sleep mode - the fan visible on the case is stopped, PC is completely silent, keyboard doesn't respond, and the monitor is of course off (yellow light) too. When I left-click the mouse, the fan spins up and the monitor comes back on. Upon wake, I go right to the power plan and it's set at 30 minutes sleep which is not how I left it.

- no other software is managing power/shutdown, etc. I checked the list of installed programs in the last month through "programs and features" and nothing is suspect.

- no BIOS update recently. I checked the Gigabyte site and there hasn't been updated drivers since 2010 which I'm pretty sure I have already.

I think I'm going to do a system restore to way back if this continues and report back.

*solved*

As soon as I close the application Airstream from the systray it changes my sleep setting to 30 minutes. If I re-run Airstream, it sets sleep back to NEVER. Reproduced many times. I even changed it to 1 hour sleep and when Airstream closes, it sets it to 30 minutes. When I re-run, it sets it to NEVER instead of 1 hour - it does not retain the previous setting.

Strange stuff. If anything, I don't mind that it sets it to NEVER when being run, but when it closes, it should set it back to what it was even if NEVER.
