In 2015 I built my son a PC

PSU: EVGA tx650
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020

MB: Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7807MQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

GPU: EVGA GTX980
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487079

RAM: G.Skill ripjaws 2*4gb
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231455

Now I pulled another PC apart and took the RAM Ballistix 2*8
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B006YG9EEW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and put it in WITH the g.skill

I know youre not supposed to mix ram but I figured it would just be unstable, could that have damaged the MB?
The machine wont even boot to a decent BIOS. I get a gigabyte uefi text but then it just reboots and goes into a shutdown loop. Tried the RAM one by one and that didnt fix it. Swapped the GPU. nothing. Not sure where or what to do next.

Unplug your PC, and clear your CMOS to reset your BIOS.

//edit//

I also had two of that particular motherboard, and they were absolute headaches. I ended returning them and went with an Asus board.

If the problem remains, then look in the BIOS & MB Manual (for MB jumpers) for available adjustments related to RAM and CPU. Some things to try in order to attain stability include:

- Try slightly increasing the RAM voltage (use smallest available increments)
- Try different (slower?) RAM timings
- Decrease CPU speed
- Decrease bus speed
- Increase slightly CPU voltage (use smallest available steps available such as 0.05 - 0.1 volt)

Admittedly I havent kept up with the technology, but these used to be common things recommended to try with new systems which would have trouble locking up. It is one of the reasons for purchasing the hardware as a suite from a vendor or from a reliable publication that has assembled and evaluated the hardware suite that you are using (ie, not all hardware brands & types necessarily work well together; there can easily be quirks; I found some MBs just wont work well with a particular GPU).

Could have messed up the SPD settings the bios was trying to use. As UsandThem mentioned, reset the cmos and try again. If you want to try that RAM again, put the RAM with the loosest settings in the first slot and go tighter as you go up.

That board is extremely finicky with RAM. That was my biggest issue with it.

Clearing the CMOS was my friend before they went back.
