So, I took the time and did the research, saved the funds, and ordered my computer parts. Everything showed up, I was super excited! So I put it all together, got all my drivers loaded, and fired into testing. Things kinda slowed down at this point. I really feel like I invested a lot into this machine and that it really should have soared. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but that's why I am here. Here is the list, you guys tell me.

Vista Ultimate 64
Intel i7 920
I want to tell you what motherboard I have, but I can't right now... I got it from the intel retail edge program, but don't have the model right now.
OCZ Summit OCZSSD2-1SUM120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk
2x Asus ATI Radeon 4890
KillerNIC K1
LG Blue ray player
6GB PC3 10600 Crucial
700watt Modular PSU

If you need anything else, lemme know... but I really feel like it should perform really well. It's fast, but shouldn't it be blazing?

i would jump to windows 7 RC/RTM version with an ssd.

first thing you should do is update your ssd's firmware to the latest version.

you are likely using an intel board which cant overclock so you lose the advantage of being able to overclock (especially if you have a d0) to mind boggling speeds. an i7 @ 2.66 will get trounced on by an oc'ed c2q.

invest in a quality non-intel branded mainboard.

1. Should be blazing fast at doing what?
2. What research indicated that the Killer NIC was a wise option?
3. A Core i7 920 runs at a fairly slow clock rate. What research indicated that the 920 was a wise option for your application?

Flesh out your PC usage and research sources a bit more for us.

it wasn't about what research indicated the 920 was a wise option... it was a decent processor at an amazing price.

if going with that bundle is what cost me the speed I was looking for, then fine, but I really don't see how that is what is causing it be slower than expected. If you want some benchmarks, I can do that, but do you have any in mind?

and I went with the killerNIC because of the bandwidth allocation it has, because I am gaming a decent amount obviously.

The DX58SO from that program can overclock.

How is it slower? Lower rame rates? Fewer Folding work units? Boots slower?

Okay, for the time it takes from the moment you power on your system to when Windows is finished booting is not something you can affect much.

What resolution and IQ settings you use can affect framerate.

If you "upgraded" from a fast Core 2 Duo/Quad or Phenom setup to this, then no it won't be much "faster." "Fast" is relative. Going from 10MPH to 100MPH is FAST. Going from 90MPH to 100MPH may not be noticed. (OMG I shouldn't talk about going fast - got pulled over for speeding yesterday )

There is still load times, even with the fastest SSD. Unfortunately you did not get the fastest (or second or third) SSD.

Spikesoldier is right - Everything I've heard/read about says go Windows 7 with a good SSD for a "snappier" feeling.

Otherwise, your machine specifications look really awesome, so I don't know why you aren't happy with it unless you had some unrealistic expectations. Your e-peen is already bigger than mine.

If you really wanted a Killer NIC, why did you get the lower end K1 instead of the M1? Alternately why not the PCIe version (Killer NIC Xeno?)?

That being said, the best thing for gaming is to not have any downloads going. As the Killer NIC can only prioritize traffic from your own machine, if you have problems with other systems on your household network utilizing bandwidth, then you should have gotten a gaming router which has similar bandwidth shaping/prioritizing as the Killer NIC, only on a network-wide basis.

for the record i can have 100+ connections in utorrent and still game perfectly fine with my onboard NIC. i highly doubt there's any observable difference with the 'killer' unit.

and this thread is highly silly until he actually tells why he feels his computer is 'too slow.'

he also needs to tell us what brand of PSU....and be brand specific..it really does matter!!

I really wish people would learn some facts before uttering garbage. Intel has, in fact, had overclocking capabilities in their Extreme series of their motherboards since the 975 chipset.....there was the 975XBX (nice board, btw!), then the SP45SG (P45 chipset), the DX48BT2 (X48 chipset), and finally the latest board in the Extreme series, the DX58SO.

Every single board in Intel's Extreme series is quite capable of overclocking, and while it's true they cannot compete with OC'ing from EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, DFI, et al, the Intel boards are NOT slouches and are some of the most durable and compatible, esp. with memory, boards out there.

Here's a link to Intel's current mb lineup......the Extreme series, the topmost listed boards, are Intel's OC'ing boards:
