Okay so recently an issue has arose with my PC. I cannot turn my computer off all the way. If I hit "shut down" or hold the power button, the only thing that will happen is the computer will go into some kind of stand by mode. The only way I can get it to power down is by flipping off the power at the power strip.

The other day when I booted up I got a message saying "checking hard drive for consistency", and I dont know what this means but maybe it shows what is wrong. The other issue is that sometimes ill be doing something on my computer, doesnt seem to matter what, and it will shut down or go to the stand by mode that I discussed.

Is my hard drive failing? Anyone have any ideas?

You hard drive isn't failing. You will probably corrupt your data if you keep powering it off at the power strip though. You need to state which version of Windows you are using (I know it is Windows because of the standard 'checking hard drive for consistency' message).

Can you be more specific with what happens when you choose the shutdown option? What text do you see displayed before the screen goes blank? If your computer is shutting down or going to standby on its own then you either have malware or some terribly configured and brain damaged UPS software.

Having a computer go into standby while you are trying to hold the power button to force shutdown is not uncommon on fast computers. Anyways, please respond to my few questions or all I can do is overload you with information on a number of related topics.

Oh yes, sorry i meant to include my specs.

Running vista home 64 bit, 6GB of RAM.

When I choose shutdown, all that happens is it goes through the normal windows shutting down screen, and for all intensive purposes the monitor shows nothing unusual. But what is different is my actual PC does not go off, the fans keep running etc. Im not even sure if it is going into a standby mode its just the only word I can think of to describe what it does.

In my experience, failure to shut down is usually a driver issue. Drivers can also cause the problem while you are running.

The default action for the vista shutdown button is to sleep. You can change this to shutdown in the advanced power settings " Choose What The Power Buttons Do " so when you press the shutdown button it will shutdown. You can also change what happens when you press the power button which is also defaulted to sleep.

If you do not want to change these you can click the right pointing arrow to the right of the word shutdown and select shutdown from there and it should power completely down as you want.

This is what I have been doing and it goes into the sleep state even when I hit "shut down".

Try to change your power settings for your power button that when you hit the power button it will shutdown and see what it does.
