Hi...new to the forums here...and in the process of piecing together a SLI system based on the A8N board. Been reading quite a few posts about the various power supplies being used. I was thinking about the PC Power & Cooling 850 ETX (SSI) which should be released towards the end of the month. Specs say it is a 4 rail PSU with over 60 amps available, but doesn't give the breakdown for each rail yet. I was curious if anyone out there has heard anythiong good/bad about this PSU.

Thanks!!

Thank's ribbon! The zippy you linked to looks great also...and it's just over 100 bucks cheaper than the PC Power & Cooling.

Here's a link to the pre-release info...forgot to put it in my original post.

Whats the 4x2 pin connector for exactly? Wonder if this would fit in the Lian Li V-1200...

I've talked to the technical rep at PC Power and Cooling (Larry, I think...) about this psu for about a half an hour last week. The 8 pin connector is basically 2 12v 4pin connectors, since it is intended for use in a dual cpu motherboard. I told him I was thinking of getting one and what I would be powering with it and he simply asked "why?". He said the 510 sli is plenty for any single-cpu sli system. He also said that they could make an adapter for the 8-pin 12v connector for a small charge.
It sure does look bad, though.

So it sounds like I am heading for overkill and throwing cash away...is there generally a good power supply recommendation for an FX-55 SLI system with 2 6800 GT cards (BFG OC), 1 GB memory (Corsair XMS 3200XL), 3 SATA hard drives (74 GB Raptor & 2 NCQ Maxtors), and 2 optical drives (SATA DVD writer & SATA DVD)? I'm working on getting a good list together before I start ordering everything...appreciate suggestions.

Like I said, the rep asked why I would spend the extra money on a psu meant for a dual cpu board. He said the 510 sli is more than enough. I run the 510 pci-e version (1 pci-e power connection) and have zero psu-related issues.

If you don't mind looking at other brands the 520W OCZ Powerstream is a great PSU and it costs less than the pc &c 510 sli. The 550W Sparkle is also a good PSU for what you're doing.

A 4-rail PSU wouldn't even be compatible with single-CPU MBs. I mean, how would you make use of the 3rd and 4th rails? And of the remaining 30 amps on two rails, you'd encounter the current limitation on 2-rail PSUs, which is that any excess amperage on one of the other of the rails can't be used. It's possible that using the PCP&C 850 would NOT be sufficient to power an SLI system with two power-hungry video cards. How's THAT for ironic?

I have an almost identical setup but with 1GB more memory 2 74GB Raptors a 400GB Seagate and another 34GB Raptor, an Audigy4 Pro, Belkin Pre-N card, and a couple of thermal gauges and it runs beautifully on the PCP&C 510 SLI.

How I'd do is:

1 rail-mother board, around ~22A
1 rail Molex to video cards around ~18A
1 rail for drives around ~14A
1 rail for case fans water pumps ~6A

This would give great power and signal integrity to IC's.

I assume that since it has two PCIe graphics card connectors that they are targeting this at the nForce Professional motherboards that support dual CPUs and dual graphics cards.

Just a warning: The Zippy doesn't work with the DFI nforce4 boards...

I had been thinking about getting both ( i have a zippy 400w, that is pretty damn solid and is powering my 6800GT rig in SLI right now qith out a problem... but I am using the asus board)

Out of curiosity...why doesn't the Zippy work with the DFI boards?
