Pc refuses to boot

I have a Windows 7 PC that refuses to boot. Earlier, when I used to turn my PC on, it went up to the screen where it it shows the windows 7 icon at the time of booting and then it would "reset"(restart the booting process). But it would start properly in the safe mode.

I went ahead and created a new partition and tried to install windows 7 again. But i couldn't even install windows. The same thing happens again.

Makes me wonder what could it be?

Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks.

PC specs:
8400 3Ghz CPU
4850 Gfx Card
2GB Corsair RAM
MSI Platinum MoBo
Corsair 450W PSU

Refuses to boot huh? I would kick that pc out, and tel it to either boot, or get a job and support itself. Your not there to take care of that pc for the rest of its life, sooner or later it has to grow up and get some responsibility.

If this is a fresh install of windows 7, how old is the motherboard? Have you checked to see if the motherboard has any issues with windows 7?

If its booting in safe mode, but not regular mode, its probably a driver or an issue with some other software.

When the problem first occurred, that installation was a year old. But as I mentioned in my original query, I also tried installing Windows afresh on a separate partition but still it "reset" at the same point.i.e. a little after the Windows 7 logo appears at boot.

My entire PC is 2 years old and yes, the motherboard is 100% compatible with windows 7.

You are right, but what puzzles me is the fact that, why the hell is it affecting a new installation?

sounds like defective ram failing upon post bootup, pull one of the modules out and try again.

Hi Activex, I did change the ram(removed both modules and tried a different stick) but to no avail. The problem remains.

I'am wondering if the bios in the motherboard needs to be reflashed? Or if the motherboard is starting to go bad?

It looks like you have eliminated everything but the processor and motherboard.

I don't know about the processor and motherboard but I have a different suspect.

Well, I tried installing Vista for a change and it installed properly. I got to the desktop finally! But there is one problem, when I was installing the drivers, i was restarting after every install. After I installed Ati's drivers, Vista did not boot but it just hung on the boot process(around the same place where Win 7 used to restart.).

I restored the system to the point of the installation on the Ati driver and it started properly.


Well, I have a Palit 4850 which is 2 years old. I suppose the warranty is 1 year on GPUs. Can GPUs be repaired? If I take it to their service center, will they be able to repair it if I pay for the repairs?

Try running checkdisk on the drive.

Yeah, it sounds like it has something to do with the video card drivers, because in Safe Mode, it uses the MS VGA drivers I think, and doesn't do anything advanced with the video card.

Ya but thats what. I mean, if a card went bust, then shouldn't the VGA thing should also go down(the whole card)?

Does any one have any idea about the warranty that Palit offers.

This is a driver problem. did you update the driver lately. if it all started with new driver roll back to previous.or make sure you have the good driver.

Thank you for replying. I don't think that its a driver problem because the drivers that previously worked flawlessly with my card don't do so anymore. also, fact that it is affecting a new installation also rules out any possibility that the OS may be responsible for the restarts.

I suppose it depends on what country you're in, but according to the Palit website, for North America, warranty is one year if purchased before June 2010, or 2 years if purchased after that.
