PC shutsdown when starting HTC Vive or using Gamestream after upgrade

Hello there, my computer has been shutting itself down and showing the Asus Power Surge warning when rebooted. I've recently upgraded my GTX 1070 to a Titan V (I'm studying Deep Learning algorithms among other things) and I ran the usual stability tests using OCCT/FurMark and some benchmarking (Superposition benchmark) without any apparent stability issues even after hours.

Unfortunately, when I try to use my HTC Vive, as soon as I turn Steam VR on and the systems gets a "lock" on the headset the whole computer turns off and I get the Asus Power Surge warning at the next startup. The same happens if I try to use "heavy" games like Forza Horizon 3 and I want to stream it to my Shield TV using Nvidia Gamestream. If I play the same game on the PC everything is fine and I tried multiple benchmarks and stress test that run exclusively on my PC with no issues whatsoever. Also if I use a lighter game, like Binding of Isaac, I'm able to stream to Shield TV correctly.

I've tried deactivating the Asus Power Surge protection but the PC just turns off anyway, without showing the Asus Power Surge message and that's it.

I tought of upgrading the BIOS but I don't think it will be helpful.

My PSU is a Seasonic X-650 80+ GOLD which I think should be able to supply an adeguate power to my configuration, at least according to online calculators. The full configuration of my system is the following:

Asus Z87 PRO MoBo

Intel i5-4670k

2x4GB DDR3 Corsair Low Profile

Samsung 850 PRO 256

WD Black 2TB

Prolimatech Genesis heatsink with two 140mm fan

1 frontal 20 mm FAN, 1 back 140mm fan

Nvidia TITAN V

USB 3.0 PCI-E card

Before I look for a cursed graveyard under my house, is there anything I can try? Is there a way for me to get a log of what's happening to the power lines when the PC shuts down? I've tried manually looking at the values while the shutdown happens but I don't get any anomalies.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help on this.

Your PSU is probably on the Edge. I would replaced it with a 800 Watt Bronze.

Make sure that the Fasn and every thing concerning Cooling is Clear and do its Job.

I thought the same! But then why would it not fail during 2+ hours of heavy load on both CPU and GPU (using FurMark and such) and just specifically fail with Vive and Gamestream?

Thanks for the hint.

Is there anything I should look for in Process Explorer? I've already checked the temperatures, they are within the norm.

Also it always happens almost immediately after I activate VR or Gamestream. So no time for them to rise at all!

I've measured the Power consumption at the plug and it never goes up ~370W before the crash.

How old is your power supply? The nvidia recommend power is 600 watts.
If your power supply is more than a couple years old, it is no longer pushing the 650 watts it once did. Beyond that, I would feel better having at least 700 watts for that type of system. I am sure the power supply is still fine for a lighter load.

My PSU is 5 years old now, a Seasonic X-650. I was not aware of such a degradation of power output on a PSU. I guess I'll try by updating my PSU to a 750 or 850 one.

Any particular suggestions concerning the characterstics?

Sounds like a failing power supply. I suggest Seasonic Focus Plus or Prime, EVGA G2 or G3, Corsair AX, HX, RMx. All should come with 10 or 12 year warranties. I think 650W should be fine but if you plan on doing overclocking and/or updating your CPU to something more power hungry later on it would be wise to get a 750 or 850 unit now so you don't need to worry about it later.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I think I will try buying a Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 850W hoping to solve my problems. And as you said is also excellent for future-proofing.

Those are good suggestions, and a good choice. The goal is to make sure your power supply won't be running too close to max power whenever it is under load.
