Hello there
Have an old HP machine
Tried starting it; it started up, light and CPU fan, but no monitor screen.

Any ideas on what it might be please?
Thanks

More info needed: precise model, graphics card, CPU, Windows version etc and, if applicable, how it is connected to the monitor.

A typical and simple cause of something like this in an old PC would be the graphics card has been removed or is now faulty.

Assuming it is a desktop the obvious first thing to do would be to attach the monitor to the MB output instead of the graphics card. If it works and you get a display then the graphics card is most likely the problem.

I can not tell because the sticker on it is worn. But it connects to the monitor via the mother board and NOT an graphics card inserted into the PCI slots

As above no GC, only what is built into the MB

Yes PC Desktop. If its gone on the MB then should I look around for a spare GC?

it is possible that the CPU doesn't have an integrated GPU. Only way to tell is to remove the CPU cooler and see what is on the heat spreader. Does the PC look like it ever had a GPU in the PCI slots? Can you take a picture of the PC? The internals? Show us that all the proper power connectors are installed.

To note! The computer has worked before and no modifications have been done to the CPU

Have you removed and reinstalled the Ram sticks? Also as In2Photos mentioned, purchase a new Cmos battery. After you remove the old battery wait a few minutes before installing the new one.

Not really a display forum topic, unless you have doubts whether the monitor itself works. Since it is the display forum, has it been tried with another system? Does the manufacturer logo usually come up first and does it now? Does an LED power on indicator light up consistent with it staying on? It is not uncommon to have monitors fail, and not end up in a working mode, but usually the LED power indicator shows something different.

Otherwise, how long ago did the system last work? Has it been moved since then, so perhaps it's worthwhile to try reseating the memory?

What evidence did you have that the battery was nearly flat? If you knew that, then why wouldn't you have replaced it already? Have you tried clearing CMOS? I realize some others have mentioned this, but it bears repeating.

How old is the system? Another possibility is that sometimes capacitors just shelf rot, so examine both the motherboard and interior of the PSU for vented capacitors.
