pc suddenly restarting problem

My borthers pc is starting to behave kinda strange.

His gpu makes alot of noise and so he was using the asus epu 6 tool to decrease performance when hes not gaming. Now when he starts a game after a while his pc suddenly restarts. This doesnt happen every time but occasianly. He tried to lower the settings of the graphics and well it work for a few days but then the rig started to restart again and now it happens once or twice a day.

The epu program doesnt do much actually u can only adjust some performance settings. And as his rig is making alot of noise in idle mode he set his performance to low in idle and on high for games. Normally without this program he doesnt have any problems at al. But now he can uninstal the program and the problem still excists.
He sometimes can play for hours and sometimes the rig just restarts suddenly. Its not frequent but its annoying.

Rig isnt overclocked has good airflow and 4 coolers in it and an aftermarket cpu cooler. Rig is also 6 months old.

Asus p5q pro
E8400
Artic cooling cooler

xfx 4870 1gb. Man that thing makes noise. My 4890 1gb vaporx doesnt even make any noise. Strange is something wrong with his card or is it cuz i got the vapor x edition.

4 gb ocz reapor pc 8500 ddr2
2x samsung spinpoint sata disks
samsung dvd rw
OCZ modxstream 600 w psu
4 100mm coolers
antec 300 case.

Tried to find out what the problem is myself but i cannot seem to find any issues with the hard or software. My guess is cpu is getting too hot will do a cpu z test tomorrow. but he states the temps are pretty low. Cant be gpu related as a gpu problem wont let the rig restart suddenly. Psu might be the problem but like i said its not a frequently problem. Is there any test out there to test whats wrong. Or just throw in a new psu and w8 till it restarts or confirm it works great?

You can try to test the PC with Prime 95 / OCCT in order too check if the problem shows up in high LOAD situation.

When you run one of these scans, make sure you check the temperature (in load condition)

Also run MEMTEST 86+ scan to check if the RAM dimm's / slot's are damaged.

ok ty i just mailed my brother what u said and hell look into it. When i hear more i will post it here.

brother tested his gpu.

Only thing that changed were the temps of the gpu. And suddenly the pc restarts again as if hes playing dead space.
He thinks the gpu becomes to warm. But i doubt that that could make a pc restart as i have neverh eard of that before.
He now has all his fans working on 100% and that didnt change anything. He also put his gpu back to factory settings and now is checking if that worked.

Ok cpu is idle 34 degrees and stressed 45 degrees so no probs there.

However the gpu is running on 120 degrees celcius on stressed mode. so the problem is his gpu.
Anyone know a quick solve for the xfx 4870 1gb for the overheating problem. Other then applying for rma? Or know something that could be wrong with it. We dont want to void warrantee

You can try to spread new and fresh Thermal Grease over the GPU, but that will probably void your warranty.

Why do you want to avoid rma?

I work at an asus rma department. I know how long these things can take up. And at best hell be getting a new card wich prolly be getting the same problem as its a cooling prob. Hmpf xfx cards are a no no for me now.

looool problem solved.

He took apart the fans from the heatsink and saw a bunch load of dust cooked onto the heatsink and removed it.

VGA is 60 celcius stressed now looooool. hahaha ty all for ur advice
