Hey guys, just wondering if anyone here would be able to help me out here or point me in the right direction...

I recently set up an HDTV in my house, Olevia 237T 37" LCD HDTV to be exact. I am getting a home theater setup going but I have one problem that I have not been able to fix. When I am playing a movie or show from a computer I have connected to the TV, via VGA cable, I get some pretty bad distortion in the picture in certain scenes. It's like some sort of extreme ghosting where certain parts of the screen hang up on moving objects then the screen only corrects it when it changes scenery. Any help would be appreciated and if you need more information just let me know. Thanks.

What are the computer specs - particularly the CPU, memory, video card, and software you are using to play videos?

I have used this PC for many things in the past including playing TF2 on it so I don't think that its so bad as to not play media onto a TV. I'm probably wrong though hah.

Specs are as follows:
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 3000+ running at 2.1 GHz
Memory - 1 gig DDR
Vid Card - 128MB RADEON 9800 pro

As for the software, I have tried using both windows media player and winamp. Both do the same thing.

That kind of sounds like experiences I've had with very heavily compressed video that has a lot of artifacts in it. Are you sure it's not a problem with the video itself? (if it's a video you're watching)

Thanks for the welcome!
I am positive that it is not a problem with the video itself, I have watched them on a computer monitor before and have not had this problem, only on the television.

Have you tried to use the HDMI inputs on the TV with a converter from your computer? I have never dealt with the particular model you mention, however it is possible that some sets have a problem accepting a signal over a particular resolution through a PC specific input.

Your system is right at the low end of the spectrum for use with a TV, particularly if you are trying to play videos that require hardware acceleration other than MPEG1/MPEG2. As for your vid card, I'm not familiar enough with the 9800 Pro and the vagaries of the ATi drivers to give you any tweaking decent advice.

Keep in mind too that while the 9800 was great in 3D gaming for its time, 2D acceleration is an entirely different animal.

I use to have a 9800 pro. It is capable of displaying 720p movies with a Athlon64 3200+ processor. However, 1080p movies did not work well.

I haven't tried the HDMI cables but I know that the computer itself is capable of playing media, not even HD-media, without this ghosting or whatever it's called. Sometimes i watch shows and it plays flawlessly but then I play it again on some other day and its very choppy.

If your video card has dvi out and your tv has hdmi inputs you can try using a dvi to hdmi cable. You should get a better picture this way too.

Sounds like a problem with your codecs - or settings in CCC. What version CCC? Have you fine-tuned your HDTV settings in CCC?

I had a 9800pro (with tv tuner that I didn't use) and had no problems (socket A - xp2200+) on a Sony 40-inch Bravia. Enabled hardware acceleration, vmr9 render, PDVD codecs ...

How's your power supply? I think those 9800's sucked over 50 watts ...

edit: I fergit .... did your update your agp GART?

I have 9800pro with 1800+ Tbred-B as my main computer. 720P will get somewhat choppy in terms of playback framerates if I have any other program that uses cpu open (Norton, etc), but no artifacts are added in. Does this problem exist over DVI?

Well I haven't touched any of the settings in CCC, up until now I just had the regular video card driver and never bothered with CCC, but now I have it installed. As for the version, it's the most recent one i guess 2008.0122.1519.27310 is what it gives me under CCC version. I have not played with any settings either.

Power supply is 550 watt's so thats not really a problem.

Not really sure what you mean by the agp GART but if you mean drivers then yeah those are also the most recent.

The GART driver is a motherboard chipset driver. As I remember prior to installing the video card they recommended the update.
