OK, here's the deal. I've resurrected my old Duron800 system and havin' a blast with it. It runs Win XP Pro just fine, but the sucker doesn't wanna shut completely off.

If I shutdown from the XP start button, (like normal folks) it shuts down all the way to even hearing the HD spin down, but the PSU and cpu fan keep running. The screen also glows black.....(i.e. nothin' there, but it, too thinks the pc's still on).

From there, if I push the power button it shuts off in approximately 2 seconds. (No prob 15 years ago, but as of about 10 years ago, I like to walk away from the pc and have it shut itself off)

It didn't used to do this in WinME just in Win XP. I checked the BIOS but nothing in there about shutting down. Power-off option shows "instant off" which is why the thing just shuts off completely if I touch the power button but the only other option is "4 sec. delay" which I don't think will help winXP shut the pc off so I'm just leavin' it.

Specs for reference..........

Gigabyte GA7ZX (rev 1.x) -----> BIOS "ff" as of a couple weeks ago but it still did this even before the bios update. BIOS update just took care of a sound issue)

If your power management mode in BIOS is set to APM change it to ACPI and do a repair install to replace the HAL.

LOL!! Ahhh.....yeezzzzz BSOD's.........LOL!!

Well, looking thru the bios there's not really anything obvious in there. The only thing it does show regarding ACPI is the STR type.

It gives 2 choices....

1.) S1/POS
or
2.) S3/STR

It was set to S1/POS originally. I switched it over to S3/STR, but it doesn't change the shutdown situation.

Also.......what is HAL?? (Besides the evil computer in 2001 a space odyssey?)

HAL is Hardware Abstract Layer. APM and ACPI require different HALs.

And yours is already set to ACPI if those are your options.

OK, so I'll assume that ACPI setting is not my problem.

I did notice that there's a jumper for STR via the mobo book, but I keep goin' back to where this thing never had this problem in winME. It's gotta be somethin' in XP.

I also noticed that in ControlPanel>PowerOptions>Advanced that only the top portion is showing options. The bottom half which usually shows options for "power buttons" is completely vacant.

Any more ideas???

Thx!

Thanks bacillus......

Gonna try a couple of their "power down" suggestions as my Windows definitely seems to get all the way to shutting down, just not ***powering*** down.

Also gonna go ahead & e-mail Giga-byte. I bought the friggin' board brand new back in 2000 so might as well get some tech support for the dough....... Since this is definitely a prob in their bios.....(whether XP's acting funny or not).

Red,

Check this:

In Device Manager, select to view hidden devices.
Do you see something like "NT APM Legacy Device" that is disabled?
If so, just right-click it and enable it.

Let us know.

KGB,

Thanks........ya', that's definitely one of the things I'm gonna try that I saw on that link from bacillus. It's sittin' at home right now so I'll know about 6-ish PST but I'll definitely report back.

TGS,

No, it's definiltely not going into hibernation 'cuz I *can* select "hibernation" from the shutdown menu and it does do it, but it finishes where WinXP splash screen says "HIBERNATION............it's now safe to shut off your pc" (or something like that). So the hibernation definitely works but I still have to push the power button to completely turn it off.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate everyone's help/input/etc.

Okee dokeee............

Problem solved!! But it came down to a 'last resort'....bios update!! (Bios flashes always make me nervous)

Anyway, for the Gigabyte GA7ZX1 (rev 1.x) I had to go from the original bios to "FF" rev. to solve a "scratchy" audio sound. (also only showed up in XP, not ME).

I had noticed another bios update, but figured since I had the sound problem solved I'd leave well enough alone.

Well, I tried everything posted/suggested and while my fingers were crossed, the sucker just wouldn't submit to my brow beatings........LOL!!

Soooooooooooo........I gave up & loaded the latest bios shown for this board which was "FG" and I noticed a couple things happen.

#1.) When XP loaded the first time, it found a couple new controllers *AND* (probably most important) properly loaded the drivers for them automatically.
#2.) In Control Panel>Hardware.........this time when I enabled "hidden devices" it showed that ACPI module as actively running w/o probs.

So I bit my tongue & shut her down..........and while she doesn't shut down exactly like a newer system (which may just be how this mobo always did it & I've forgotten since the ME days) it shuts off and then, just as if I pushed the power button like before, it gives about a 1 or 2 second count, then shuts off completely. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! What joy!!!

I've also noticed it boots *and* shuts down a bit faster than before, so I'm happy all around!! Thanks again guys for the suggestions & hopefully this post might help somebody else down the road. If all-else fails, bite your tongue & flash the bios!! :Q
