PC won't stay off

I just built a PC with a 3.2GHz CPU, ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe MoBo, 1GB of DDR2, a nice 24pin 500w PSU, Sound Blaster Audigy 2, modem. Shutdown is normal, but then it restarts after 4 minutes.

Do you have Wake-on-LAN (WOL) enabled?

Otherwise, it could be that SkyNet is beginning to become aware. :Q

Just in case, WOL settings can be found in bios usually under some "power management" section.

Wake on modem ring is another one. You just have to hang up the phone and the computer will turn on. That's the way a friend of mine turns on his computer so he doesn't have to reach down to press the power button. He just taps the speaker button on his phone twice. lol

I'm having a somewhat similar problem depending on the bios rev, a reboot will shutdown and then turn the system back on. I've tried totally different hardware on 2 p5gdc-v and 1 p5gdc and it will do the same thing sometimes on 200fsb and on all of them when it goes over 200fsb. I've had it turn on out of nowhere once and all of the power management features are turned off. The only thing I havent had a chance to try yet is a seperate pcie vid card just a pci vid card.

I had that problem also and just trying a few different things I found out what caused it. It was the inf app update 6211001 I got from Asus site. I reverted back to the original inf6011002 version that came with the MB. This fixed my problem. Maybe I was lucky but it may be worth a try for you if you used the updated file from the site.

Sounds like wake on lan. WOL.

Try going into your bios and see if there is an option for it.

Or, check your network interface card's manual to see if there is this feature.

Also, to just test the issue further, remove your ethernet cable from the back of the machine, leave it off and see if it does the random start.

If there is no ethernet cable connected, you don't have a lan connection and therefore WOL should not start the machine.

Remember, there are all sorts of nasty people out there with bad intention and some may go as far as to try to turn your machine using WOL to try and take over your connection/machine.

A firewall may defeat this feature, I am not certain though.

If thats not solving it, try the temps, it could be restarting cause of that.
