pc2100 ecc

hi all,
just purchased a few 1gb sticks of pc2100 ecc ram. I have 3 gb in the machine at the moment that are mixed and matched. Is there a utility or program that can identify the installed ram and list whether or not its ecc/non?

and btw, whats the difference?

ECC memory will have a number of chips that is a multiple of 9.

Why the hech do you need 3gb of ram? You'd be better off with less, faster ram...

i am a 3d artist, i work on hi-res film environment shots that can have anywhere from 600,000 to tens of millions of poly's at at time. When i bought this dual 1.8 about 3 years ago, i told myself i'd wait until the proc speeds double. That time is almost here

You would count the number of big black chips. For a 1GB stick there would probably be 18 or 36 of them if it's ECC. Another thing to consider when dealing with high capacity pieces of memory is whether or not they are registered. Chances are that the memory you already have and the ones you just purchased are both registered and ecc. A quick way to determine if you have registered memory is if there are 2-3 horizontally oriented chips, each about 1/3 the size of the larger chips, either between the larger chips and the gold contacts, or inline with the larger chips. You can't mix registered / non registered memory and you shouldn't mix ecc / non ecc memory.
