PC3200 Suggestions???

I am looking to get a gig of PC3200 for my Shuttle SN95G5 XPC (nforce 3). When I put it together I just took 512 of my Ath-XP's gig until I had some cash for new memory. Well, the time has come. I have decided though that I don't want to go top end for memory.

I am looking in the ballpark $100 range.

I checked out a review for the Twinmos Twister PC3200 which is supposed to use the winbond BH-5 chips. On the review they have a link to what is supposed to be that memory on newegg at $101 so I thought that would be what I would get but I don't think what newegg has is the same stuff, mainly because it doesn't have heatspreaders and on newegg's site it says it has a CAS of 2.5, not 2.

Then I thought about it and it seems to me that BH-5 memory is gonna cost way more than $100 for a gig anyway.

So, what is my best bet for around $100. Overclocking is definitely a consideration. I realize that for $100 I am not going to be able to get the best overclocking possible, but I want to try and get the best overclocking possible for $100.

The stuff that comes up on newegg for the Twister Twinmos 3200 here seems like a pretty good deal but I wanted to post up and see if anyone had any better suggestions.

Thanks.

guess it depends on what you are also running, imho, you can get pretty decent speeds with corsair VR around $80 shipped! Mushkin or G.Skill also good bang for the buck...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It seems like there is no definitively best budget RAM then? Is it worth it to add heatspreaders?

Heatspreaders look nice but don't do anything else then that....they are pretty much useless. I would look at either Geil or Patriot for some value mem. at that price range. Both of these choices offer some pretty good memory for overclocking while they remain on the value side.

I too have heard good things about Geil and Patriot. I have Corsair VS, which is good value, but I don't know how overclockable it is. You can get 1GB of Corsair VS for 80 dollars from chiefvalue.com.

Corsair VS memory. OC in sig.

BTW twinmos would be a better choice only if you have a board capable of 3.1+ volts.

corsair value does not require a lot of voltage.. my 512mb stick is at 205mhz on a .83 ratio to htt at 2.7 volts... it will boot at 230mhz with only .05v increase but isn't very stable.. if i raise the voltage on anything, my psu starts to whine, so i'm waiting til i get a new psu to push anything further.. edit: just re-read what you said.. i must have read it wrong at first

moral of the story, corsair value is EXCELLENT ram for any system, budget or not.. low latencies seem to be more for people who rate their computer with benchmarking tools and not so much real-world performance. for the price, there is no competition.

chiefvalue
newegg
both with free shipping

even for insane overclocking, super low latencies aren't required.. example

Well the mobo to this system only goes up to 2.8 or 2.9 (can't remember offhand) so it sounds like it is gonna be Corsair VS. I'm cool with that as it's $20 cheaper than the Twinmos anyway thanks for the help.

Interesting that the other day the memory was $81.00 on sale but today it's 79.99 not on sale hehe.

TWINMOS hands down.

Can you say 2-2-2-5 @ 250 fsb?

No value ram can compete with UTT BH-5 period.

Can you point me to any places that are actually carrying the Twinmos? The stuff on Newegg doesn't use the BH-5 chips.

Looks like luck of draw on the TwinMOS. Some people got UTT and some didn't. And looks like you need a helluva vdimm to get it to run at 250, and some even at 3.4V. I'm tempted, but would rather get the Corsair Value.

that is just unnecessary for a normal person building a normal computer.. i think board manufactures would agree since only high end overclocking boards support that much RAM voltage... not only that but they get hotter than lower voltage ram

Wrong, my UTT is barely warm to the touch at 3.4V.

Like I said before, UTT is designed to handle these voltages.

i have no doubt that it is, would be silly for it to be any other way..

however they do run hotter than ram that runs at say 2.7v.. edited my other post

Alright well whatever the stuff in the review was is not what is on newegg. The review stuff has twinmos heatspreaders on it and says right on the label 2-2-2-5.

Anyway, it is besides the point. Like I said, the motherboard in this system doesn't go over 2.9v so even assuming I got the BH-5 if it takes 3.4 or 3.6 to get those speeds then I would be SOL.

So for a difference of $20 and considering the fact that I am somewhat voltage limited would you still recomend going with the twinmos? Or should I get the Corsair VS?

I told you already, twinmos doesnt use heatspeaders and not to go by neweggs rating.

The stuff you saw was a completly different model.

If your cautious, get the OCZ Value I gave a link to.

Yes we are past that and on to the issue of me being voltage limited and whether it would still be advantageous to get the twinmos since i max at 2.9
