Sorry if this is old news.

You can get pcAnywhere for $85 + s/h at MSBCD

There is a upgrade/competitive rebate for $80:

Purchase pcAnywhere 10 and get $80 USD by mail, if you own a previous version of pcANYWHERE, or any version of LapLink, ReachOut, Carbon Copy, Timbuktu Pro, Rapid Remote or DeskLink. Limit one Rebate per product, per household, per Company, per address. Manufactures Mail-in Rebate offer is valid for a USA and Canadian address Only. Rebate form(s) included with your order or in the product box. Rebate information must be postmarked no later than 30 days from the invoice date.

If you don't have the necessary software get a cheap old version (it says any version) of one of them from somewhere.

This type of software will probably become obsolete now that XP has built in remote desktop sharing. Works pretty well too! (I can log into my machine from work through my web browser ).

Knowing the M$ track record for exploitations, I'm just waiting for when the Remote Desktop service will be hacked. Won't that be fun.

Question for Fritz....You said you can log on to your home pc (which is using XP) from your web browser at work. Is your work pc running XP also? I have XP Pro at home, but Win98 at work. If I could do that it would be wayyyy cool.
How did you get that to work?

Thanks

Word of caution:
This is a registerable manufactory sealed CD sleeve from Symantec directly!!
It does not come with manuals or retail box.

In XP click Start/Help and SUpport and do a search for 'remote desktop web connection' It will give you back everything from installing it to setting it up and connection from work or home through the web browser.

I just did it and connected to my XP pc from a ME pc through the browser.

Of course the remote pc has to have a net connection for it to work.

I use VNC and it's really slow, even through a 100mbps network connection. Is PCanywhere any faster?

You can connect to your XP Pro computer from ANY computer with a browser. I have DSL at home, so here's how I'm set up.

1) Go get DNS2GO. It's a free dynamic DNS service. You sign up, install a small client on your PC that runs as a service, and it synchronizes your current IP with your chosen domain name whenever a connection is detected.
2) On your XP PC, you have to enable IIS services, then in the details of the service, check the box that says something to the effect of "enable remote access" (there's like 5 options there, you'll see the one to enable).
3) Now, in Computer Management, you HAVE to assign a password to the account you want to use to dial remotely, and you have to give it remote access permissions.
4) You should now be able to get to your machine by entering "http://<your D2G domain>/tsweb" into any web browser. You'll get a connection screen, just hit "connect" (do not enter a computer name or anything in the window).
5) You should get a Windows XP login screen. Enter your username and password, and you're in.

It works very well with a 128K upload speed. You can even connect at full screen (so it looks like XP is installed on your current machine ). Also, there is a software client included on the XP CD that you can use if your web browser doesn't work. The Terminal Service client from Windows 2000 is also compatible.

As for hacking, a hacker would have to get past XP's user authentication remotely, which wouldn't be easy (you actually use an account on the computer to log in). This is actually nothing new, as you were able to do it with Terminal Services for NT 4.0 since 1997, and in Windows 2000. XP just made it 100x easier to set up the web components.

Yeah...VNC is very slow. It's pretty good for old computers though (we use it to manage old PC's in remote buildings).

Does anyone know if it good at connecting to computers thru firewalls?

Here on campus, I'm only able to connect to my computer via VNC if I'm in the same building.

You need to have a port opened (I think it's 1672 or something...it's listed at Symantec.com). Otherwise it won't work with a firewall.

Well... VNC is good but lacks file transfer ability.

The reason I need PC Anywhere is so that I can easily transfer files between my home and office computer. And at the end of the month I also want to transfer my entire office HDD to my home to make backup.

I'll have to check for WinXP remote dektop thing and see if it works.

Con someone tell me if the Remote Desktop feature is available in the Home Edition of XP? I can find NOTHING that says it isn't, but it is mentioned in the help system that you can send the email request from Home Edition.

It would really suck if this only works in the Professional Edition....

I use PC Anywhere (version 9.2) daily and it works great on a Windows 2000 platform. I use it through a cable modem and a DSL connection running 256k or 512K (depending where I am) and it works fast enough to do remote Paintshop Pro editing. As for backing up a hard drive, I am not sure my connection would suffice. But I have done 50 meg mp3 transfers with no problem.

PcAnywhere 10 isn't compatible with Windows XP Pro. PcAnywhere 10.5 is, however.
PcAnywhere may not be necessary for many users here, but in the corporate environment it is better cause of the extra features it has.

Yes, don't use pcanywhere 10 with winXP, from what I've heard it will break your remote desktop.

#9 Software has it for $12.00 with no rebates or anything. I've ordered from them before with no hassles.
