pci-e versions?

I currently have a MSI-K8N Platinum motherboard with PCI - Express running a 7800Gt, i'm looking to upgrade the graphics. if i get an 8800GT will it work with that board even though it runs on a newer PCI-E version(2) ?

yes, pci express 2.0 is compatible with 1.0

Your PCI-Express is 1.0a it will be fine.

Some motherboards with just the 1.0(no "a") have problems and it may require a flashing of the bios to get the newer PCI-E 2.0 to work properly.

Actually, you are being mislead. There is no PCI-E version 1.0. there is 1.0a and 1.1 and 2.0. Not all motherboards with 1.0a are compatible with 2.0 cards. However, as Wheezer said, some motherboard companies are working on an updated bios to remedy this situation- Biostar already has and Abit is currently working on it.

Check these threads and any links on the for more info regarding your other board. I am not sure if I have heard of any MSI mobos having trouble though, so you might be ok. Be glad you don't have DFI as they have not been too helpful to their customers yet.

Simply get a P35 board and live without it... the extra bandwidth of pcie2 does nothing for current cards... it will only be useful in the future..

However, the extra power supplied means you don't have to plug in your PEG connector.

if i plan on getting a 3870 for cheap and then buying something later down the road, maybe when the multi core GPUs come out, will the lack of pci-e 2.0 hurt?

Current cards don't even come close to maxing out PCI-e 1.0 bandwidth; PCI-e 2.0 nearly multiplies 1.0's bandwidth by a factor of 6, IIRC, so I wouldn't worry of any bottlenecking in the near future.

awesome that helps alot. if u were to approximate though, what do u see the longevity of the 1.0 life being? in terms of when its bandwidth is no longer enough?

Cards coming out probably won't be demanding more bandwidth than the 1.0a spec can deliver for a couple years I would think.

It was almost 3 years, then it was replaced with 1.1, which is what the P35 motherboards have. BTW, no PCI-E 1.1 motherboards have problems running PCI-E 2.0 cards, only some of the boards with a PCI-E 1.0a slot.
