PCI Ex Speed

Simple question (I think). Is there a way I can tell what speed my PCI Express slot is running at? I've heard that sometimes it can run at 1x when it's really supposed to run at 16x. I've also noticed a choppiness in my games lately and I don't know if it's because of this issue or something else.

In your bios, set it to 100 MHz. See if that helps.

Well for nVidia at least their driver control panel tells you (on the main start tab it says "Bus: PCI Express x16")

You're asking about this because you think there is a problem with your PCI-E. I posted a potential solution. Have you tried that?

I'd prefer not to fix the 'problem' unless I know there is a problem. I want a diagnostic tool at the moment.

Lonyo, thanks for the info. I think that's only for XP, but I'll double check. Maybe I'll dual boot with XP and Vista for a few months

It doesn't hurt to give it a try since it won't break anything. If it fixes whatever problem you might be having, then it confirms you did have a problem, it confirms what the problem was, and it confirms what the solution is. If it doesn't help, you just go back and look for your "diagnostic tool" (Everest? Sandra?)

CPU-Z
On the bottom mainboard tab it has graphics interface, Link width and Max Supported. I believe that's what you're looking for.

I can't vouch for its accuracy however.

Who said I was running a beta?

Anyway, the Nvidia control panel DID have it and it IS running at 16x. I haven't tried CPU-Z as yet. I've used the program many times before, but I didn't think to use it now. Thanks gerwen

Now I know the issue is NOT the link speed.
