pci express x1 sata card?

Hello,

Would you recommend pci express x1 sata card?
I need to connect BR Drive over SATA.
My MB all SATA ports are taken already, I need extra port.
It would be nice to get eSATA as well, but only nice to have.
Which brand and card to get?
My main concern is that people complained about some cards that it takes over boot order that can't be disabled or changed as it starts before MB bios boot, another issue with drivers for Windows.
I use Win8 64bit.

No No and No! All sata pci bracket card. It will be slower then what your getting now. Dont buy it you wont be happy. Just wait to upgrade mobo etc.

Real curious about this too. My mATX board only has 4 SATA ports and I need more.

HighPoint Rocket 620

2 6Gbps SATA ports on a PCIe 1x card. It uses a Marvell chipset so performance and compatibility is decent. And it's a pure SATA (non-RAID) card, so it presents itself as an AHCI device and doesn't require additional drivers.

I have to use cases:

1. new MB that has 2 SATA-3 and those are used for SSD, no needs for SATA-3 speed, but need for extra SATA port to attach BRay RW drive. I think SATA-2 speeds would work just fine, so x1 is Ok

2. old MB with SATA-2 ports only that needs SATA-3 speed for boot SSD. I think x1 would max out at 3xx speed, where SSD can go at 5xx speed. So x1 has to be out of picture and x4 has to be the way to go.

What do you think about this card for case #1:

It can do Raid 0/1 & has a Marvell controller. This one has max speed of 5 Gbps instead of 6 Gbps due to the Marvell controller. I think, all or most of the Marvell chipset is capped at 5 Gbps, or SATA 2.5 speed.

If your motherboard has pci-e x4 slot available, then use something like this:

Newer Marvell controller & should be a true 6 Gbps SATA III speed.

This one has been running 24/7 for about half a year now. No problems, had updated FW and drivers online.

Edit:

It is hosting a 1.5TB Samsung, SATA II device.
The controller is running at x1 speed, 2.5Gps but is capable of 5.0Gps (dunno why).
I have not benched it.
