Big issue though - the damn thing won't play XVID at all with DirectDraw/DirectX acceleration enabled. Once I go up to that ticker, playing a movie just results in a complete freeze and lockup.

I don't know if it's because the MB I'm using is older, but I'm annoyed to all hell. (It's a BX133 RAID with the most updated BIOS I can get, even with a hacked in newer Highpoint driver for large drives).

If anyone has any ideas, would be appreciated. :/

Have you tried the 84.21 driver?

Yeah, I got a bunch when I googled - unfortunately you can turn up a bunch of crap. And shockingly for some reason I looked for an nvidia forum and couldn't find it. My brain is just off today (monday and all). Apologies for that.

And bunny, found that info after I posted that. I'll test it out and see...hopefully that will resolve the issues.

Thanks, both of you. Appreciate it much.

I was using the latest drivers on my PCI 6200, but trying to play videos would bog the system down and basically cause it to become unusable. I switched to the 84.21s and its playing all my video files just fine and I've yet to find any serious flaws.

picked up a few. I don't have enough DVI ports for all of my monitors - this will work quite nicely.

I wonder if it's worth replacing my 64mb Radeon 9100 non-pro... that card can still play Guild Wars on my Dimension 2400 at very acceptable framerates with everything turned down

The 84.21's are working for me, video wise. Unfortunately there's still some artifacts (black pixels at certain placeson the screen, over icons and certain graphics...). Also, I'm just having some IRQ issues with my board that's frustrating as heck. (Gotta love PCI2 and 5 sharing an IRQ, but a board will work in PCI2 but not PCI5 if the opposite is empty...grrrr...)

Is this worth the $30 to upgrade from a 64mb integrated Intel 654 video chipset? I can play Counter-Strike 1.6 but with the lowest settings on everything. It's all blocky and I get 10-20 FPS. Maybe that's why I die all the time and find no joy in the game. Personally, I just want to be able to watch movies but with all the problems that seem to be rising with this card, I'm a little reluctant to spend the $30 even if it wasn't OOS. I'm also looking for a LCD monitor so the DVI is a plus (anyone have any LCD deals???).

Get the 84.21 drivers and you'll be fine. And yes, it's worth $30 upgrading from the 64mb integrated video.

This is definitely the best PCI card of all time in both performance and features for Vista.

I just tried out CSS @1024x768. Works good.

There was a 128bit mem interface FX PCI card at one time, but the clocks/pipes/architechure of this model outclasses that to still be faster.

The faster the PC I buy, the better I am in CSS. Not even joking..
Your post cracks me up though.

You'd be a fool not to jump on this card for $30, esp if you need DVI as well.
The issue with the video will be fixed by Nvidia soon, if not the next release.
Till then, the 84.21 release was only the last release.

Not to crap, but too bad it lacks component output and has an el cheapo HSF rather than a proper HS. I wonder if it can run okay with the fan disabled?

Just got this installed today- the first thing I did was to unplug the fan, and I am happy to report that the card runs at 48C in 2D mode; I have two monitors hooked up to my 7800GT, and have my LCD TV on the 6200, and all is well. Using 84.21 drivers.

The card is in the first PCI slot; immediately underneath it is an Audigy, and I have two 92mm fans for front intake running at 5V with an HDD blocking some of that flow. Point being, poor airflow, suboptimal location, running passive = no problem temperature-wise.

Hep, thanks for the info.

Though it is not suitable for demanding 3D, I wonder if it would burn up sans fan? Is it possible and are you willing to test that?

I am pretty sure it would get ugly in 3D mode without some direct airflow. The 6200 will get up to the mid-50s (idle/running in 2D mode the entire time) after one hour of Oblivion due to the heat pumped out by my 7800GT.

I don't ever see myself using the 6200 for any kind of 3D work, unless my primary video card failed and I needed a stopgap- in that case, I would certianly plug the fan into my fan controller for 3D work.

I put a 6200TC (PCIe) in a rig I built for my folks, and that thing got up to 75+C after 10 mintutes of RTHDRIBL- the TC had a larger aluminum heatsink, with a much greater surface area, and was in a better location with more airflow.

Though the cards are rated for upwards of 100C, I doubt the dinky heatsink on the 6200PCI would be sufficient in passive mode, unless there was a decent amount of air blowing over it from front intakes or a side mounted fan. I suppose you could go aftermarket, but spending even $10 to cool down a $30 card. . .

Thanks again for the info. If I got one it would mainly be as a stop-gap with 2D and TVO. I don't really feel like fiddling with a replacement HS or voiding the warranty or spending the shekels. I suppose a generic "586" class HS could be glued on.

I don't really need it to be PCI either but I thought if I will be replacing the mobo within a few months then it could also do temp duty there. Otherwise I could opt for a 6200 AGP which already has an adequate HS and also component output. How is the S-Video quality on these things and can videos remain windowed on the PC while automatically full screen on the TV (as with ATI Theater Mode)? I have heard conflicting reports and something about having to send the video manually. Also, what's up with the lack of "High-Quality Scaling" on the 6200's for HD content? Does that mean HD looks like crap? Does the PCI model have any HWA at all? AGP only has AVC/H.264 but no MPEG-2.

I'm fairly certain that you can put peanut butter in a PCI slot and connect your monitor to it and it would be better then that integrated chipset. Chunky requires more cooling though.

Seriously, buy it. For $30 your going to get a decent upgrade.

I agree with N3cr0, it is worth the $$. Plays Halo (admittedly not a current generation game) just fine with at high resolution with all effects on, using a very recent model Celeron-based machine. Maybe a slight lag when there is a lot of action on screen, but usually just fine. Really cannot complain.
