Looks like there's plenty of room to put in more NAND for even larger capacity drive in that same 2.5" form factor and yes... that price/GB is nice. I doubt we'll rarely see a hot sale on those since they are flagship... but it's still nice to see .40/GB off the bat.

Good capacity, but absolutely horrific prices. Price/GB is a meaningless metric if used solely, given it ignores the actual amount you're out of pocket. $800 in this case.

You can pick up a 7200RPM 2TB HDD for ~$50: http://www.amazon.com/HITACHI-Desks...7367&sr=8-10&keywords=2tb+internal+hard+drive.

That puts the SSD at around 16x (sixteen) times higher cost per/GB.

And let's face it, with a drive that big, most of it is going to be cold storage data and not something that needs fast I/O, which makes it even more of a rip-off. Maybe in 2-3 years the price will be more realistic.

All true, but there was a time not too long ago when 1TB SSDs were north of $500 and look at those now They are dropping more quickly than anticipated two years ago.

Good point about cold storage. I wouldn't trust priceless data on one, especially an 850 EVO.

At least they didnt come out and say hey, 2tb @ $3000. According to todays 256gb ssd prices, its in-line. No one really compares 3.5 drive to 2.5 drives either. How will you put a 3.5 7200 rpm drive into a laptop with single 2.5 drive ? you can't.

8 850 evo @ 256gb ssd at 99 bucks = 792
=
1 2tb ssd at ~800 bucks = 8 dollars more

Add an extra $20 and get an external 2TB 2.5" USB drive, and you'll still save $730. USB powered drives are also more power-frugal compared to 7200RPM drives given their power comes solely from the interface.

$730. Yes, you keep $...7...3...0 in your pocket. You can build an entire PC for that.

Those with disposable money tend to lack that kind of rationale

Yet it feels 160x times faster. People are already paying ridiculous amounts of $$$ for 10 fps more.

I am REALLY glad this came out from a good brand, like the Evo line. Long overdue! I constantly need SSD's larger than 1TB for projects. Expensive, but yay that they're available!

Quick, everybody, your 1TB SSDs are overpriced! Panic and drop prices precipitously!

Yeah once I can get a 1tb SSD for about $200CAD, I'll bite. I'm still on a 180GB drive for my OS. Would prefer at least 500GB, but I'll hold out for a 1tb.

About $200 too expensive, for what it is. Drop the price, and then people will buy them.

2TB is MBR's threshold anyways... Then you'll have to start messing with EFI's anything beyond that... Hence Win 8 and Win 10 to the rescue! Win 7 EFI's implementation is kind of buggy, but it works once you get it going!

Still 8x as expensive as it should be. Honestly, SSD prices have stagnated these past 3 years or so. The coming price wars that everyone had been predicting for years never happened. Now we hear it's all gonna come in 2016. Getting 1 TB for 100 dollars should be a rule of thumb.

That would still make it carry a significant premium over a HDD, but not an atrocious one as currently is the case. Laughable.

I think you have that backward. People will buy them and then the price will drop over time.

I agree, someone will always be around to pay out the nose for the newest tech, then the price will drop for the mainstream.

Personally, I don't have any use for a 2TB SSD, in my case it would only be used for file and media storage... and, in any event, backed up on a spinner because I don't trust SSDs against failure (much like I don't trust any HDD against failure, but usually the HDD gives you some sort of notice... it's been my experience SSDs don't.)

I know what is going to replace my five 1TB 840 EVOs now. All I need are three 2TB 850 EVOs.

Prices have been dropping by a steady ~20% year over year.

Outside of choosing whether or not to buy it, who are you to dictate the pricing of SSDs for manufacturers? LOL Also, as someone else mentioned, prices have been consistently dropping year after year. I'd like a $400 2TB SSD, but that won't happen for while. You are free to wait.

Most of my computers are running a boot SSD (128-256) with a 2TB spinner, so this will allow me downsize to one drive in each machine with the benefit of consistent speed across all files. It's about dang time.

As happy as I am with the introduction of 2TB solid state drives I have to agree with this post. The prices are horrific. But I guess we have to start somewhere.
