"PC's get more virus's than Macs'"

Just heard this on the latest "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" commercial.

So, when I boot up Ubuntu on my spare XP2500 rig, it's more prone to Virus's than OSX?

I'd like some Apple/Mac users to explain this one.

Don't be obtuse. They're clearly comparing the OS X platform to the Windows XP platform and NOT the underlying hardware (which is nearly identical these days). OS X does get fewer viruses than Windows 2000/XP, mostly due to the fact that Windows' larger market share makes it a bigger target for malicious coders.

BTW, I'm not an Apple/Mac user.

I honestly don't care what they 'meant', nor interested in a pop culture explanation of platform security when I'm a security admin for +10,000 users. As a sidebar, we don't get virus's, and we don't have armies of A+ certified geeks running around doing spyware scans.

The commercial says; "PC's get more virus's than Macs", and I'd like Mac/Apple users to explain it.

So when one of our divisions runs Windows Virtual machines inside their IBM AS400 with a x386 card, then that half million dollar server is a PC?

What's the "code" then for running Linux on athlon64? 'Girlfriend?"

More viruses target Windows then they do OS X. That is a fact.

It is very obvious that they are comparing windows, no "PC" or "x86 architecture" to mac (since make is now on intels). your enterprise setup, properly managed may not get hit, but how many non-geek mom and pop operations, or home users can say the same thing? I'll bet apple's non geek base has a lower occurence of malware

If Microsoft were to do the same stunt, you'd likely be screaming and ranting about it, so you get over it.

A lot of people get riled up over the apple commercials. I just think it's stupid for someone who is intelligent to pay any attention to the marketing droids. They're just there for the ignorant. And that applies to all companies.

All the ones I associate with because I don't let them run local with admin rights, which is really all the "proper management" you need. would you like me to show you how to do this?

If the Windows user isn't running with local admin rights, then both platforms have nearly the same chance of getting hit by Malware or Rootkits, which is pretty much zero. If you care to dispute this, I'll point you to links that will prove it.

(1) If you run Windows, you must surf with local admin rights so you can catch all those nasties and hence give Linux and OSX users something to mock you for. However, if you run Linux, please try to use an account without /Root rights because it's safer.

It means that Mac users can attempt to open any mail attachements they recieve and surf to every website they like with a vanilla browser installation and still be save, meanwhile the average PC machine of the average looking PC guy is toast after this.

...But Here's my frustration:

While you make a valid point about marketing, I encounter the same distortion in forums like this everyday. Somebody asks about 'security' on their Windows box, and immediatley we get 1,000x responses from A+ queens about what brand of Spyware Scanner / Virus Scanner / Software firewall they should install. Meanwhile SysInternals and even Microsoft's own security division, along with every frikken Windows corporate admin on this planet are howling that it's not the solution.

Yes, absolutley, marketing is crap. However, the Apple commercial can get away with this because you have the same morons mentioned above promoting the problem.

The commercial was trying to make a point. How much people took it seriously? I doubt it was many, but the one thing I got out of it, it was amusing. It me think for a moment and it got its point across like many good commercials. If its going to affect my life, I doubt it but IMO it should not create a confrontation of minds.

When Microsoft fixes running as a normal users (which I think the MAY have gotten with vista, but it appears not) so that every runs as admin pretty much out of box (the first account created on home is an admin, with no warnings...) then we can talk.

You can show me how, but: 1. I already know (and do, on my windows boxes) and 2. I run linux...

btw, you ARE correct, a properly managed PC is as good as any mac/linux that is properly managed.

from that perspective, though, it's easier to make linux/mac more dummy proof for that stuff then windows. Ubuntu installs without a root user even.
